The Civil War - New York

New York

As Maria Horner Lansdale's family history tells, William Luce, whose sister (Olivia Luce) married into the Lansdales, served as an engineer for a New York naval unit (his family was from Albany; which unit he was in is unclear). He was a Confederate prisoner for at time a Confederate prison in Salisbury. She says that "on June 26, 1863, [he] was killed by a sharpshooter while making a reconnaissance near New Orleans (Battle of the Hudson)" (88).

William's brother Stephen Bleecker Luce had a long and distinguished career in the Navy. During the War he fought in several naval engagements, commanded the monitor "Nantucket," and served on the blockade. Three ships have been named after him. Read more about him at the Naval History and Heritage Command.
