Obituary | Obituary, State Times Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA), p4: Mathilde LeDoux Succumbs Today at New Orleans New Orleans, March 9 (AP)—Mrs. Mathilde McLean LeDoux granddaughter of the late Justice Edward Simon of the Louisiana supreme court who was credited with giving Longfellow the “tip” on the poem Evangeline, died here today after a brief illness. She was for many years prominent in New Orleans society. Her grandfather, Judge Simon, was a pupil of Longfellow’s at Harvard, and according to the story handed down in the Simon family, later wrote the poet about teh wanderings of Evangeline from his home in St. Martinville, La. where now stands the revered Evangeline Memorial oak. Longfellow, who never saw Louisiana, subsequently wrote the poem which contains the most moving and accurate descriptions of the Louisiana scene. | |
