  1. 1.  William GreggWilliam Gregg was born in 1642 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland; died in Jun 1687 in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware; was buried on 1 Jul 1687 in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Religion: Quaker

    Notes:

He is the immigrant ancestor of the so-called "Quaker Greggs." He apparently converted to Quakerism after William Penn visited Waterford, Ireland in 1678.

According to S252, "William Gregg settled on a tract of land of 400 acres in Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, surveyed to him 3.11.1685. He d. "ye 1st of the 7th month" ans was buried on his plantation, 1687" (8).

As quoted by Hinshaw, "GREGG FAMILY (from Albert Cook Myers' Immigration of Irish Quakers pp 122/339, etc.) Since so many Gregg families settled within the verge of Fairfax monthly meeting, Loudon Co., Va. it seems needful to give their background, as far as known. According to A. C. Myers, ‘Wm. & Ann Gregg came to America with the Dixon, Hollingsworth, Sharpley, etc. families, who came from the North of Ireland, probably County Armagh; William Gregg settled on a tract of 400 acres of land in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, surveyed to him 11-3-1685. He died ye 1st of ye 7th mo and was buried on his own plantation 1687.'"

FYI: There are many genealogies for this Gregg family, and other related Gregg families, on the internet and in print. This is not a branch of the tree on which I have done original documentary research; I have, instead, attempted to choose among what seem to be (by their citation of source information themselves) the most authoritative studies possible. I have also noted conflicting data in the notes, where authoritative sources seem to differ. Caveat litterator.

Here is his will, taken from McIndoe:

The Last Will and Testament of John Gregg

    Notes:

Kendall, incorrectly, says that he married a Ruth ____, and moved to Loudoun Co., Virginia in about 1761; Harlan (S252) knows nothing further of them.

Perhaps the reason Harlan knows nothing further is that Kendall is incorrect. She confuses two Thomas Greggs, this one, and Thomas the son of Thomas Gregg and Ann Robinson. According to the Encyclopedia's record of meeting minutes, this is the Thomas who married Rebecca Janney:

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy [vol. 6]: Virginia
    Loudon County, Virginia

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Religion: born Quaker

    Notes:

This marriage is interesting because it joins two branches of the Gregg family that seem to have diverged back in Ireland or Scotland (though how they once diverged seems to be unknown). The name seems to derive from "MacGregor." On both sides the family is Scotch-Irish. Sarah Gregg's family is descended from William Gregg, the immigrant ancestor of the "Quaker Greggs" who came from (northern) Ireland to Delaware; and John Gregg's ancestors derive from immigrant ancestor Samuel Gregg, who also immigranted from Ireland, and whose ancestor Capt. David Gregg fought in Cromwell's army.

The line which the tree on this site traces descends through their son Aaron, whose daughter Elizabeth married into the Hamilton family, and thence to the Mannens and Lansdales. Note that their daughter Elizabeth married Aaron Harlan, whose ancestors had also married into Greggs; their daughter Hannah also married John O. Hamilton, brother of another direct ancestor.

The primary source for Sarah's ancestors is S253 (Kendall, Quaker Greggs). The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy is also helpful.

According to Kendall, "After their marriage they lived in Green Co., PA, moved down the Ohio River to 'Buchanan's Station," now Germantown, Kentucky, in 1792. . . . Sarah Gregg was a beautiful woman of light frame weighing 90 pounds. Long after her husband's death she rode horseback along from Kentucky through the blazed woods to Lebanon, Ohio in Warren County to visit her children and would return unaccompanied to Kentucky" (243).

    Notes:

Harlan (S252) contains information on two Gregg families: one descended from a William Gregg (d. 1687, Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware); and the family into which Aaron Harlan marries here.

Her husbands ancestors (non-direct) had married into the descendants of Quaker immigrant-ancestor William Gregg (see the note under his Great-Great-grandfather, James Harlan). Elizabeth, however, is the descendant of two other immigrant-ancestor Greggs, both of whom were also, apparently, Quakers.

    This couple had 9 children.

According to John Gregg Fee's Autobiography,

"In 1848 I received a commission from the American Missionary Association - appropriation $200, as I now remember. Previous to this, for more than a year, my wife and I had lived on our own small resource. My wife was industrious; and I believe no man ever accused me of being idle. Aside from necessity, we had resolved that we would not only advocate free labor, but also, as far as we could, we would dignify labor by the work of our hands.
By this time we had a little frame house built by the community to be used as a school-house and church house. The Lord granted to us a manifestation of his presence. Twenty-one persons were converted, a prayer meeting and Sunday-school sustained.
In this year, 1848, I began regular preaching in Bracken County, my native country and the native country of my wife. The place for preaching was in a school-house, distant from my home in Lewis twenty-five miles. To this appointment I came every second week. Here Wm. Goodell visited us and preached two or three sermons. I continued regular preaching. The first person who there came forward to confess Christ, was my mother-in-law, Elizabeth Hamilton. Next came John D.[eMoss] Gregg, her brother, a faithful man. One after another came. In process of time came Mary Gregg, mother of the first two who came. She had secured to a bondman a deed of emancipation before she joined the church. Thus the testimony of the church was kept clear from any appearance of connivance at any form of oppression" (56-57).

I'm not sure but that his sons Lycurgus (visible on the 1850 census) and Linnaeus (taken from Gregg's volume) aren't the same person.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Education: Lane Seminary (Cincinnati, Ohio)
    • Religion: Minister, Educator, Abolitionist

    Notes:

This is the beginning of the first chapter of his Autobiography:

"I WAS born in Bracken County, Kentucky, Sept. 9, 1816.
My father, John Fee, was the son of John Fee, senior. He was of Scotch and English descent. His wife, formerly Elizabeth Bradford, was of Scotch-Irish descent. My father was an industrious, thrifty farmer. Unfortunately he inherited from his father's estate a bondman - a lad bound until he should be 25 years of age.
My father came to the conclusion that if he would have sufficient and permanent labor he must have slave labor. He purchased and reared slaves until he was the owner of some thirteen. This was a great sin in him individually, and to the family a detriment, as all moral wrongs are.
My father was observant, and by his reading kept himself familiar with passing events. He saw that the effects of slavery were bad; that it was a hindrance to social and national prosperity; and consequently invested his money in lands in free States and early deeded portions of these lands to each of his children. He did not see the end from the beginning, - what was to be the after-use of some of these lands.
My mother was industrious and economical; a modest, tender-hearted woman, and a fond mother. I was her first born. She loved me very much, and I loved her in return.
Her mother, Sarah Gregg, was a Quakeress from Pennsylvania. Her eldest son, Aaron Gregg, my wife's grandfather, was an industrious free laborer, an ardent lover of liberty, and very outspoken in his denunciations of slavery. This opposition to slavery and his love of liberty passed to his children and children's children, almost without exception."

He was married, then, to his first cousin, once removed. He was a preacher and an abolitionist. According to Frazee (S22), He and his wife "began their ministry in Lewis County [Kentucky], and served a church there and in Bracken County some eight years. During that time he preached against slavery and published anti-slavery manuals" (602). He was adamant about this, getting kicked out of various counties. He eventually became the founder of Berea College, starting from a school he founded in 1859. Also see his entry in the American National Biography.

Frazee contains pictures of him and his wife Matilda.

Bracken County has a historical marker for him at the Germantown Community Center, KY 875: "Fee received degree from Augusta College; went to Lane Theological Seminary. Had spiritual experience which began career as nationally known and determined abolitionist. A founder of Berea College who wanted low-cost education for "all persons of good moral character," regardless of race. Wrote several pamphlets advocating racial reform. Presented by Bracken Co. Historical Society and the Ky. African American Heritage Commission."

From Kentucky Rootsweb Biography Project; this bio. is focused on John O.'s grandaughter, but it is mostly on her father, it seems:

Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Gallatin Co.

MISS ELIZA HAMILTON is a native of Gallatin County, Ky., and is a daughter of John O. Hamilton, whose grandfather crossed the ocean at an early day in the history of this country, and settled in Maryland. There were born his father and all his older brothers and sisters. His father, determining upon a change of location, started with his family for Kentucky, then almost a wilderness. Learning, on his way through Pennsylvania, that the Indians along the Ohio River were troublesome and dangerous, he stopped for a year or two at a point in that State called Sherman's Valley. Here, August 25, 1794, Father Hamilton was born. When he was about a year old his father again started for Kentucky, and upon arrival there, settled at a point in Bracken County, five miles back of the town of Augusta, called Cross-Roads, now Chatham, where he lived many years and accumulated a considerable estate. Here Mr. Hamilton's childhood, youth and early manhood were spent. From here he made one or more trips on flat boats to New Orleans, returning overland and carrying the proceeds of his sales, largely in silver, in saddle bags, a long and dangerous journey in those days. Here for a few years he was in the general merchandising business, and here, in the year 1817, he married Hannah Gregg, a high-minded, warm-hearted woman, a true help-mate, who bore him nine children, and who for twenty years faithfully shared the toils and sacrifices that laid the foundation of his fortune. Of these children four daughters and one son survive, two sons and two daughters preceding him to the grave.
It was from this point also that in the war of 1812, when not yet nineteen years old, he enlisted in Capt. Baker's company of Mason County Volunteers, to go to the relief of Fort Meigs, then closely beleaguered by the British and Indians. His company went by the way of Cincinnati. He succeeded in entering the fort, and assisted in its defense. He distinguished himself for courage and activity. At one time, when a heavy fire compelled the defenders to shelter themselves behind the ramparts, the officer in command, suspecting that the enemy was marching to the assault, asked for some one to mount the ramparts, survey the situation, and report. The danger was so great that no on responded until Mr. Hamilton came by, and, learning what was wanted, sprang immediately upon the parapet, took a rapid look around, and sprang down again. Short as the time was, he was a target for many of the enemy's rifles, and a bullet from one grazed his shoulder. The officer who had asked the service, laid his sword lightly on the mark of the bullet and said, "Ah, my brave fellow, some day that shoulder shall wear an epaulette [sic]." At one time a shell fell near him. Falling, to escape the explosion, a heavy clod, thrown up by the shell, fell on his back, inflicting injuries from which he, perhaps, never fully recovered.
With the relief of Fort Meigs his time of service expired. He volunteered again, however, to go to the assault of Fort Malden, but this being found burned and abandoned, the boy soldier returned home. Mr. Hamilton came to this part of Kentucky in the fall of 1818, buying land at a point on Eagle Creek, in Owen County, call the Jump Off. In the fall of 1819 he bought the farm of Moses Rae, in Gallatin County, and in January, 1820, he moved his family to the latter purchase. On this, or land added to it, he made his home until his death. Several years after the death of his first wife, Hannah Gregg, he married Miss Grace A. Andrews, who bore him a son and a daughter. His taste for reading was formed in early youth, and he retained through life his keen, close observation; his strong common sense, clear judgment and retentive memory, enabled him to gather and carry into the affairs of life an unusually large fund of practical information. He was a natural leader of men, of indomitable energy and will, and for half a century was prominent in the affairs of his country. He was a warm politician, devoted to his convictions, and so thoroughly posted in the political history of his times, and so clear in his judgment of men and the practical bearing of political questions, that men prominent in the affairs of the Nation--congressmen, governors, senators and vice-presidents--visited his house, sought and appreciated his advice.
He was a man of spotless integrity. For twenty-seven years a magistrate, and at one time sheriff of the county, always having large dealings with the people, and moving, as it were, in the clear light among them for sixty-six years, not a single spot was ever visible upon his reputation for honorable [sic] dealing. He was naturally a fair-minded man, weighing the opposite side impartially. Persons who expected to find so strong a character controlled by prejudice, were surprised to see every argument in opposition to his cherished convictions fairly and candidly considered. To owe no man anything, to deal justly with all men in all things, was the honorable ambition of this life. He was a social man of the old-time courtesy; a fine entertainer, with a trait of genial humor that drew friends around, and made his home a social center for many years. But advancing years and increasing infirmities so closely confined him in later years, that gradually the circle of acquaintances grew smaller. Yet to the last he retained his genial humor, and the social fire in his heart burned clear and strong. He was a man of kindly feeling and generous impulses, yet so unostentatious in his dealing with the poor that few gave him the credit for liberality that was his due. A large loaner of money to persons in Gallatin and adjoining counties, he, at times, held many completely in his power; yet, in all these years, and in all these large dealings, he was never known to oppress. To his assistance, patience and forbearance, many owed their homes, and bore grateful testimony to his kindness of heart. He was a man that veiled his deeper feelings from the gaze of men. Few suspected that through the firm granite of his nature there ran golden veins of tender sentiment, and that the man of strong character and firm will was one whose nature was as genial as the sunshine, and who could be moved to tears by a simple song, who loved the beautiful in art and nature, and who,

"Whene'er a noble deed was wrought,
Whene'er was uttered a noble thought."

stood with uncovered head in reverential appreciation. Mr. Hamilton died December 18, 1885. Miss Eliza Hamilton received a good English education at Carrollton, and at Warsaw College. She owns 135 acres of land, all in a high state of cultivation, having all the modern improvements."

Minina or Minna was her nickname. There was a "defining book" of hers, a vocabulary book, that has been preserved. She wrote her name in the front cover.

Note that this Minerva has a great aunt named Minerva. And for confusion's sake, there is another Minerva Hamilton, who was born on May 13, 1826, and married Peter Weaver in 1853, and who was also from Bracken Co. Whether they were related I don't know.

Her parents and her sister, who married John Gregg Fee, were an abolitionists, but it may be that she was not, as her husband owned slaves and her husband's family the Mannens farmed tobacco in Kentucky before the War, a profession which required a great deal of manual labor. Neither she nor the Mannens are mentioned in her brother-in-law John G. Fee's Autobiography (S400).

This opposition to slavery and his love of liberty passed to his children and children's children, almost without exception." She was her husband's first cousin, once removed.

She like her parents, her uncle John D. Gregg (her mother's brother), and her grandparents the Greggs were abolitionists.

Her death date, at age 27, is from a letter sent by her mother to a cousin Ira Stout--thanks to a descendant of the Stouts for sending this along! I assume that "Mollie" in the letter is Mary. Here is the letter:

    Germantown KY Dec 5th 1870

    Dear Cousin Ira

I take my pen to write you a few lines to let you hear from us. It becomes my painful duty to record the death of our dear and loving daughter Mollie.

She died Nov 27th in great peace after many weeks of affliction. She was taken with intermittent fever in Muncey Ind on the 25th of August. We got her home Sept 29. She was just able to walk a little but was cheerful, she was troubled some with her lungs before she came home. Yes she had feared that her lungs were affected for over a year but not seriously. But after she got home her cough got worse and continued to grow worse yet she still had a hope it would be arrested and that she would again be healthy to enjoy the society of friends. She kept tolerable cheerful most of the time. She talked a great deal to us about all the friends she had visited and got acquainted with. She loved you and your wife very much. Told me when she saw she could not live that I must write to you and other friends and tell you how she died.

O dear cousins her death was certainly the most triumphant I ever witnessed.

She sought the lord in faith and on Wednesday before she died she found him the one altogether lovely. From that time until she died her countenance was as the noonday. Peace flowed as a river, she was calm and collected, talked to many kind friends. She told them that she had not long to talk and she had a great deal to say. My dear cousins she was a loving child had always been afflicted, this bound her very close to our hearts yet when the Lord blessed her so abundantly I was enabled to say thy will and not mine O lord be done. She was lovely in death, she told me to send some flower seeds to one of your daughters, I think she called her Martha but you will know which it is was as it one the one who cultivated flowers. I am glad that our dear Mollie was permitted to make the visit as she seemed to enjoy it so much. She told me of the troubles in your church. I do hope you will all be brought to gather again on the right basis, be bound to gather by Christian fellowship and love. But my dear friends it is not right for us to compromise with any wrong but stand firm for the right and God will ultimately bless us.

We received a letter written to Mollie from cousin Mattie Shirk since her departure. Annie will answer it soon. I will write to cousin Goudies. Now my dear friends we would be glad to receive a visit from you or any of your family hope you will be enabled to come sometime. My love to you and your family and other friends. I remain as ever your cousin

    R. G. Hanson
