“Courland” or “Kurland” was in what is now western Latvia.
The “Duchy of Courland and Semigallia” existed from 1569-1795 as parts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, at which point it was annexed to the Russian Empire by Catherine the Great in the Third Partition of Poland. “Courland” during this period refers to this Duchy.
