Obituary | Obituary, Times-Picayune, 10 Mar 1902: PITARD - On Sunday, March 9, 1902, at 7:30 o'clock p.m., aged 64 years, GUSTAVE PITARD, a native of this city. The relatives, friends, and acquaintances of the Pitard and Maupay families are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, which will take place This (Monday) Evening, March 10, at 4 o'clock, from the late residence of the deceased, No. 3827 Canal Street, corner of Scott Street. Obituary, New Orleans Item 10 March 1902, p2 (with image): OBITUARY – Gustave Pitard died at his home, 3827 Canal street, last night. At 7:30 he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. Death came soon after. Two weeks ago, he was taken sick, with la grippe, but yesterday morning he seemed to be feeling well. His death came unexpectedly and almost before medical aid could be procured. Mr. Pitard was 64 years old and was a native of New Orleans. He was one of the most successful business men in the city and accumulated a large fortune in the hardware trade, doing business under the firm name of G. Pitard & Bros. The firm first located, soon after the civil war, in Tulane avenue. The store was afterward changed to Canal street, between Basin and Rampart and finally to 1031 Canal street. Mr. Pitard cared little for society. His time was spent in his store and at his home. He was a devout churchman, and gave freely to charities in a quiet way. Mr. Pitard was a veteran of the civil war, serving in Watson's battery from the outbreak to the end. During the war he became partially deaf from the shock of the guns in the battery in which he enlisted. In 1867 he married Miss Cecile Maupay, who, with one daughter and four sons, survives him. The children are: Miss Inez, and Daniel, Gustave, George, and Clarence Pitard. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from his home. The burial will be in Metairie Cemetery. | |
