Military Service | He was an engineer. Maria Horner Lansdale doesn't mention his unit, which I don't know either, but he was apparently in the Navy, as his brother was. He appears in the OR in a list of prisoners--specifically, among naval officers--exchanged on Sept. 21, 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA. He was killed in the "Battle of the Hudson," near New Orleans, at the Battle of Port Hudson. General Nathaniel Banks report, preserved in the OR, mentions that he was killed during the battle (see this on the Louisiana Histories page). Maria Lansdale says, more specifically, that he was killed by a sniper on June 26, 1863. Documents relating to his capture, including a note from Gen. Banks, can be found in the Harwood Family MSS in the Civil War Collection at the Library of Congress; see MS 416 (his sister Margaret was married to Adm. Andrew Harwood). This field note book at the LOC also seems to be his. [2, 3] | |
