- Bucey was the caretaker of Essex, hired by John Lansdale Sr. in about 1938. He had been hired to work briefly for Miss Alice Waters in about 1930-32, but she didn't have the money to keep up the farm. JL Sr. hired him again when he got the farm.
The Skinners lived in the main house at Essex for 11 years, from November of 1934 until Jan. 1, 1946., when they had to move out so work could begin on the house before JL Sr. moved there. Work on the house was begun that fall and went on for three years, from 1945 to 1948. There was no plumbing or electricity in the house at the time, and the wings were added, so there was a huge amount of work to do.
His daughter distinctly remembers that it was September of 1949 when John Lansdale Sr. moved in, because she was in her school bus going to school and they saw the big orange moving van coming down the lane. After she came home from school, she and her sister came over to help move in, unpacking dishes and stuff.
Interestingly, this couple has a common ancestor with Robert Freeland who married Maria Waters:
William Hambleton (b. 1663) and Lucy Sherwood.
