- Her death certificate gives a birth date as 10 May 1828; the 1910 census gives a birthdate of May, 1833. I go with the death certificate for now. Also, her death certificate is a help because it gives her mother's maiden name.
She was living in San Francisco in the 1860 census. There are records of her travel b/t New York and Panama in the 1860s—on her way back and forth to California, I assume, either by land travel over Panama, or as a stop on a longer voyage around South America.
By 1870, her younger sister Emma moved to San Francisco as well; they are living together there in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Her husband, though, isn't in evidence any more. He may have died and left her with some money; her personal estate in 1870 is $4,000.
In the 1880 census she's the HOH, and in 1900 she's hotel keeper there, running a place--the Wenban Hotel, at 606 Sutter--that has 68 lodgers in it. It seems to be a "fashionable private address."
Perhaps she was there for the 1906 quake. [3]
