Military Service | According to Kendall (S253), John Gregg enlisted as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Application was made to the DAR using his name by his GGGrandaughter Inez Gregg; according to her application he was a private in Capt. Thomas Giddis' Co., Virginia Militia from 9 Sept. 1776 to 2 Oct. 1776, and then later served in Washington Co., Pennsylvania. Here is his DAR data: GREGG, John Birth: VA 15 Oct 1747 Service: VA PA Rank: Ens PS Death: OH 7 Oct 1799 Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No Spouse: (1) Sarah Gregg The SAR database says that he died in 1840, which seems confused. The DAR database says 1799, and this seems to be more accurate. He appears in Eckenrode's 1912 list of Revolutionary War Soldiers of Virginia; the source Eckenrode gives is the War Department, "payrolls of the Virginia LIne, referred to by folders (353 folders)"; his information is in folder 349.2. Histories | ![]() | The Revolutionary War This page collects the people on this site who served in the Revolutionary War. Some are militia; some served in the Line troops. It includes both loyalists and patriots. There may well be others on the tree who should be included. Some could use more secure evidence: genealogical histories often say that someone "fought in the Revolution," but this can be family legend rather than fact. Sources are cited under each person's page. War and Pension records can be found on line at the National Archives. Genealogies can be ordered from the DAR and the SAR, but their lists only include those whom people have used to join, not all veterans. |
