Military Service | From J. Harris Franklin's genealogical notebook: "A confederate soldier—a typical gentleman of the old school." [Note added by JL Sr.:] "He with his two brothers fought at Gettysburg in the Confederate army, Maryland Line, in the same infantry company—one was killed, two wounded." This notebook has his marriage date as October 25, 1896. He was in the 1st/2nd Battalion, Maryland Infantry, just like James Shaw Franklin (q.v.; b. 1827). He was captured and paroled in Dec. 1862; he was wounded at Gettysburg, on July 3, by a piece of shell while trying to catch his brother William as he was killed; he surrendered at Appomatox. One good source on this family is Daniel Carroll Toomey, Marylanders at Gettysburg (Baltimore: Toomey Press, 1994). [1, 2] | |
