- He was the principal of the High School in Cumberland, MD where Cornelia worked. I have his middle name from his daughter Chloe's wedding invitation.
The following biographical material comes from the typescript history of the Mason family by Kirk Bentley Barb:
“Howard Clarence Hill was born in Frostburg, Md, Nov. 6 1879. He graduated in June, 1900, with second honors from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md. Soon after graduation he entered the teaching profession, and for three years was Principal of the Grahamtown School in Alleghaney [sic-”Allegany”] Co, Md, and for eight years was Principal of the [Allegany] Co. High School in Cumberland, Md. During his time spent as a teacher, he was also president of the Maryland State Teacher’s Assn. as well as President of the High School State Teacher’s Assn. Quitting the field of teaching, and, after three years spent in social hygiene and industrial welfare work, he was chosen first secretary of the State Industrial Accident Committe, which position he held for four years with an office in Baltimore. Since Dec. 23, 1918, he has been Executive Secretary of the Prisoner’s Aid Assn. of Md. He as for at time President of the State Conference of Social Work for one year and, for one year, Secreatry of hte American Prison Assn.
“He has served in the capacity of vestryman of the Epithany Episcopal Church ans also of the HOly Nativity E. Church, both in Baltimore. On April 14, 1909 at Olney, Md., he was married ot Cornelia Houston Lansdale, who wa a daughter of Thomas Franklin Lansdale of Montgomery Co., Md., and his wife Eliza Wimberly Strain of Nashville, Tenn., and ho was born at Fredelphia [sic-”Triadelphia”], Montgomery Co., Md., July 27, 1885. She graduated from the Western Maryland College at Westminster, Md., in 1905, and taught at the High School of which her future husband was Principal, at Cumberland, Md. until their marriage in April 1909. Mr. and Mrs. Hill life at 5018 Norwood Ave., Baltimore, Md.” [5]
