- His parents are not discernible with any evidence I have seen. Two deeds are key here for naming his children:
Deed K.11, written 8 Dec. 1807, names a gift from Stephen and Mary Hieatt to their children: Jonathan; Sarah Holton, Kisiah Hieatt, John Hieatt, Tempy Thomas, Mary Cushman, Elizabeth Hieatt, and Abagail Hieatt.
Deed O.327, written 13 March 1815, between “John Hieatt and Kissiah his wife, Robert Thomas and Tempy his wife, Thomas Cushman and Mary his wife, and William Pollock and Elizabeth his wife of the Count of Mason” on the one part and “Stephen Hieatt of the same County and State of the other part” Jonathan does not appear on this list, nor do Abagail or Sarah. This is the family of Stephen Hieatt’s first wife; her name is not evident. In his 1824 will he names four children by his second wife Mary: Peyton, Elijah, Louisa, and James M. Mary’s maiden name is not known; “Day” was the surname of her first husband.

Other local Hieatts. In the 1790s there are three male Hieatts with families who appear in Mason Co. tax records. They might be brothers or cousins or even sons. They also appear later in deeds. Here they are, listed in no particular order:
1. Benjamin Hieatt, married to Nancy. He appears on the 1810 and 1820 censuses, and his estate was probated on 13 June 1829. He had three children:
—Benjamin Jr., who married Sysigambis Hodges in Mason Co. on 17 Nov 1818;
—Susan, who married John Vickers in Mason Co. on 22 July 1822; and
—Fanny, who married James Overturf in Mason Co. on 19 July 1824.
2. Elisha Hieatt, married to Mary. Elisha left a will in Mason Co. dated 18 Mar. 1812, and Mary left a will in Mason Co. dated 28 Apr. 1830. Both name three daughters—Lena, Nancy, and Polly—whom as Elisha says “it have pleased God to create them unable to procure a living by their own industry and care.” Mary’s will also names a daughter Nelly Hieatt, a son John, and a daughter Catherine McFerrin. Catherine, in a codicil, is named “trustee” to care for the three disabled daughters. She also names a friend Ross Prather as her executor.
3. Shadrach Hieatt left a will in Mason Co. dated 22 Aug. 1834. He does not name a wife, and names two children, Alfred L, and Ashfort W. There is a Shadrach Hiatt who was one of the “Maryland 400,” though that Shadrach died in a different county in Kentucky.
4. To this might also be added John Hieatt who married Keziah Hieatt the daughter of Stephen in 1803. His parents’ names are not evident—maybe he is Elisha’s son John?
5. There is also a Jonathan Hieatt who married Mary Connor on 27 May 1784 in St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., Virginia. They had 8 children. Jonathan was living in Jessamine Co. by 1800 and left a will there in 1818. There are several Hieatt/Hiatt marriages in Orange Co. in the 1780s. There might be a relation, and some names are familiar, but I have seen no evidence telling how to connect the families. [2, 3, 4, 5]
