  Biography	A biography of him--with much about his family--can be found in John Smith Kendall, History of New Orleans, vol. 3 (Chicago: Lewis, 1922): 975-77: "WILLIAM H MCLELLAN. In every community there are certain families which, by reason of the dependability or genius of their members, stand out from others as worthy of special mention, and one of these at New Orleans is that bearing the name of McLellan. For over seventy years members of this family have borne a very determining part in the commercial, industrial, financial, and social world of this city, and at the present time this prestige is being maintained by William H. and A.W. McLellan, proprietors and operators of the Alden Hosiery Mills, one of the important industrial enterprises of this port. "The birth of William H McLellan took place at New Orleans, and here his life has been spent. He is a son of Alden and Sarah J. (Cooper) McLellan, the former of who was born at Warren, Maine. In 1844 he accompanied his father, William H. McLellan, to New Orleans, the latter organizing the McLellan Ship Supply Company, and taking his son into partnership. With the outbreak of the war of the 60s Alden McLellan enlisted in the Confederate service, and served with distinction until captured at Blakley, Alabama, in 1865. With the close of hostilities he returned to New Orleans and resumed the occupations of private life. "The same qualities which made him a dashing and courageous officer won equal distinction for him in business circles, and he gained a number of financial victories. He was one of the organizers of the Saint Charles Street Railway Company, serving it as president until it was consolidated with the New Orleans Railway and Light Company. For many years he was one of the directors of the McLellan Dock Company, and at the time of his death was vice president of the Alden Mills. In spite of his increasing years Mr McLellan continued to maintain his interest in different organizations, and was a member of the Chess, Checkers, and Whist Club, of Camps 2 and 8, Confederate Veterans, and of various commercial organizations. From 1902 until his death August 26, 1920, he was quartermaster general of the State Organization of Confederate Veterans. "Enjoying excellent health this hale and active man of eighty three years, who had faced the enemy's guns on many a fiercely contested battlefield, was the victim of an accident, July 10, 1920, at Camp and Lafayette street, and was knocked down by a truck. Owing to his age and the nature of the injuries death resulted some six weeks later at his residence, 2403 Carondelet Street. His remains were interred in Lafayette Cemetery. Mr. McLellan was survived by four sons, A.W., Charles W., William H., all of New Orleans, and Alden, Junior, of Denver; and one daughter Mrs, Theodore McGinnis, of Panama; also a brother Orris I., formerly a state senator. "The family record of the McLellans is very interesting, as the following shows: The McLellan family are descendants from Hugh and Brice McLellan, who came to Portland, Maine, about 1789. "William H. McLellan, who was the first McLellan to settle in New Orleans, was born in Warren, Maine. He moved to Tomaston, Maine, where he married Leonora Levensellar, and they had four children: Alden, Sarah A., Charles, and Orris I. In 1844 he came to New Orleans. "In April, 1857, Alden McLellan married Sarah J Cooper, who was a daughter of A.W. and Mary Ann (Sullivan) Cooper. Alden and Sarah McLellan had six children: A.W., Annie G., William H., Leonora, Alden, and Charles. A,W, McLellan married Helen DeGrange, a daughter of Col. Joseph A. DeGrange, and they have two children: Alden III and Helen. Annie G. McLellan married Theodore McGinnis, and they have two children: Theodore Junior and Joel J. William H. McLellan married Anna Glidden Woodward, a daughter of Capt. Thomas J. Woodward and his wife Fannie B. (Glidden) Woodward. Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McLellan have had five children: Anna, Estelle, Woodward (deceased), Sarah (deceased), and Leonora. Alden McLellan married Ruth Kyle, and they have one son, Alden Junior. Charles McLellan married Ernestine Bres, a daughter of Edward Bres, and they have five children: Charles W., Leigh, Edward, Donald, and Sarah Louise. "Since the death of the father William H McLellan and his brother, A.W. McLellan, have had complete charge of the Alden Mills, which were founded by their father. Because of their connection with these mills and their knowledge of textiles they were able to render the Government a very valuable service during the World war by serving as members of the Textile Division of the War Industrial Board. "A graduate of the New Orleans public schools and a life long resident of the city, Mr. McLellan is naturally heart and soul in favor of all measures which in his judgment will work for the betterment of his home city and its people, and is willing to do his full part in forwarding any public spirited enterprise of merit."
