Notes |
- He was born in Louisiana, but there is little narrative of his life that remains, it seems. He kept a picture album covering the years 1917-1930 or so, though very few of the pictures are labeled, unfortunately. He lived in Mandeville for some of his early years. He attended Tulane for 2 or 3 years, but didn't graduate. He was in ROTC, and a member of PiKA fraternity.
In the 1930 census, he and his brother Wallis are living in his father's house; the Alex LeDoux family is right next door.
His was a small wedding, in 1931.; only close members of the family attended, according to the wedding announcements. After their marriage, they lived at 339 Pine Street in New Orleans.
In 1934, he started to work for Armstrong Cork on July 1st; he retired on July 22, 1966. For 1934, office papers archived at Tulane University for Freret and Wolf, an architectural form, contain documents for "Audubon Blvd, 214, New Orleans" . . . "Pitard, Gustave J. Jr. Residence alterations." This was Doug Freret; he and his wife Liz (family notes say "nice guy; she's a nut"!) were family friends. In the 1930 census his job is “house furnishing.” He was apparently doing some work on his in-laws’ house at Audubon Place.
The family moved to Baltimore in June 1940 (month noted in a family album); he was a linoleum salesman for Armstrong Cork Co. The first summer at Gibson Island was summer of 1940; they bought a house there in 1943. This where they moved when they retired.
See article in the Frederick Post, 20 July 1954, where "G.J. Pitard" is mentioned, with a photograph, as a manager at Armstrong Cork.
His date book says that on 6 Feb. 1956, he stopped smoking; he restarted, however. He smoked unfiltered Picayunes until the early 1980s when a Dr. told him to stop, which he did, pretty much cold.
He had a dry sense of humor. “If I eat any more chicken,” he would say, “I’ll cluck.” Every Lent he gave up alcohol, “just to show it who’s boss.” Beer, however, was not alcohol. He enjoyed golf, poker with friends, and Chesapeake Bay oysters.
A note in his date book says that Anna Gamard died on July 6, 1963: this is his aunt, his mother’s sister. Since relatively few such dates are recorded, it’s a good guess that he had been close to her. In the 1920 census he, with his wife and two children (Gu, 17, and Wallis, 24) were living in the Gamard household at 4106 Canal St. Anna, aged 42, was the only other of Lucie’s siblings living there as well.
The house on Gibson Island was sold on June 22, 1987, and they moved to Charlestown, outside of Baltimore, a few days later.
He was known as "Pete" to his whole family, including children, and "Beep" to his grandchildren. One story why he was called Beep is because he used to make the sound when he played a drum. Maybe, also, it was because kids said "beep" instead of "Pete."
