Military Service | According to documents quoted by Frazee, "He was out to protect and guard the frontier settlements, and was in several several scouting parties, and in an engagement with the Indians at Frankstown, served in all sixteen months, no dates of service stated" (568). Some brief testimony about his experience is quoted on 570-73, which he gave because there was no documentary evidence about his service in the War. Like his father, he also served in the service during the Revolutionary War. His family lived in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania at the time. Frazee (S22) records a variety of documents relevant to his pension application and will. On 21 Oct. 1833, at age 68, when living in Bracken Co., he applied for a Revolutionary War pension for his service for Pennsylvania (app. #1759). He states that he was born in Baltimore, MD, on 1 Nov. 1765; that he first enlisted from Bedford Co., PA; that his children were Elizabeth (b. 16 Aug. 1790), William (b. 16 Mar 1792), John (b. 25 Aug. 1794), Polly (b. 6 Mar. 1798) and Jean (b. 6 Oct. 1799). He appears on Military Pensioners in Bracken County in the 1840 census, aged 76, in the Northern Division. According to Peden, "John Hamilton was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, November 1, 1765 and entered in the Revolutionary War in Bedford County, Pennsylvania prior to the Revolution. He married Deborah Perkins in Perry County, Pennsylvania on June 3, 1788, and moved to Monroe County, and then Bracken County, Kentucky. Their children were [. . . as given here, but he does not include the two youngest, Samuel and Joel]. On October 21, 1833 John Hamilton applied for and received a pension. His widow subsequently received pension W1759, having applied in 1849 while residing in Bracken County, Kentucky." Note that there is another John Hamilton who died in Indiana Co., Pennsylvania in 1818, and who was also a Revolutionary War veteran; he was not from this family. [5, 6] | |

Histories | The Revolutionary War This page collects the people on this site who served in the Revolutionary War. Some are militia; some served in the Line troops. It includes both loyalists and patriots. There may well be others on the tree who should be included. Some could use more secure evidence: genealogical histories often say that someone "fought in the Revolution," but this can be family legend rather than fact. Sources are cited under each person's page. War and Pension records can be found on line at the National Archives. Genealogies can be ordered from the DAR and the SAR, but their lists only include those whom people have used to join, not all veterans. |
