Naturalist, author, and teacher, his activities covered a wide ranc; writer of philosophical papers, organizers of societies, Museum Administrator, Pres. of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Prof. of Zoology and Paleontology in the Mass. Institute of Technology, instigator and director of ‘The Teacher's School of Science,' Boston; Fellow of teh Amer. Acad. of Arts and Soiences; member of the Natl. Acad. of Science. He was an assistant of Loius Agassiz; introduced Biology into the public schools; was a Prof. of Harvard University." [1]
