He was a great friend, and first cousin, to Metta Tomlinson (Lansdale). He also was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, tracing his ancestry back to through the Tomlinson line to Tabitha Knight. He was an amateur genealogist, working on not only his own but also his wife's family.
