Military Service | Eaton mentions that he was a Captain in the Maine 1st Reg. Heavy Artillery, Co. E, in 1863. I can't, however, find him on any roster for the unit, nor can I find any record of a James McLellan having served in any Maine Company, though many Mclellans from Maine (and New England) did serve the Union. A James "McClellan" does appear in the Civil War sailors database, but the entry shows an error wtih no information. In any event, he was a supporter of the Union, which means that he was on the opposite side of the war from his brother, WHP McLellan, and his nephews, the sons of WHP. According to a descendant, as recorded in the tree in S 685, "James was on the Union side during civil war and His brother W[illiam] HP [McLellan] was Confederate. It is said William even threatened to hang James from the yard arm of his ship if they ever ran into each other. After the war since they were Confederates WHP and his family nearly lost their holdings in New Orleans, if had not been for James, so all bad feelings seemed to have been forgotten and forgiven. [That is, it seems, James helped to save them from losing everything.] | |
