Death of Dr. Thomas J. Franklin [Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun]
ANNAPOLIS, Md, July 28 - Dr. Thomas J. Franklin, whose illness was mentioned in The Sun, died yesterday at his home, near Sudley, Anne Arundel county. Dr. Franklin had reached a ripe old age, being an octogenarian. His death was due to the infirmities of age. Miss Ann Franklin, residing on State Circle, opposite the capitol, is his sister. The late James S. Franklin, for many years clerk of the Maryland Court of Appeals, was a half brother. Dr. Franklin, while not taking an active part in politics, was always considered a consistent democrat. His friends on one occasion desired hiim to become a candidate for State Senator from Anne Arundel. He consented, but the politicians wanted someone else. He was highly respected in the county. |

- Of West River, Maryland. He is often recorded with the middle name "Jacob," but this is an error that's been handed down; family documents clearly show his middle name as John.
His parents are buried in the Quaker burying ground in West River. In 1867, he was one of the trustees to whom was given care of the Burying ground, along with other West River residents including members of the Cheston, Hall, Deale, and Waters families.

From J. Harris Franklin's genealogical notebook: "Graduate Saint John's College. Graduate of Medicine--Maryland University age of 21--bought ‘Oakland' from his father--a most superior man in every way and beloved by all who knew him." He died of a disease of the bladder.
Married three times, he lost two of his wives. Of the three children by his first wife, one died young; a second died at 14 (of a kind of diptheritic infection, possibly--she got what seemed to be a cold and died in three days); and the third died at age 33. Of the children by his second wife, one died young, and the second, Eliza, was the only of his children who out-lived him; she wrote two memoirs. Eliza was born with a twin who died after a month. The death of his first wife's third child, Joseph Harris Sr., managed to send her into a kind of depression (likely a bipolar disorder, from descriptions in family documents) for the last part of her life from which she never recovered. This third wife also suffered from a severe spinal injury which left her in much pain. [5, 6, 7]
