Obituary | Obit. The Crowley Signal (Crowley, LA), 26 May 1917, p2: CAPT. THOMAS J. WOODWARD BURIED SATURDAY New Orleans, May 21 - Capt. Thos. J. Woodward, distinguished civil war veteran and one of the best known men of affairs in New Orleans, was buried Saturday Death came to Capt. Woodward on Friday of last week, as the direct result of an automobile accident which occured ten days or more ago. Captain Woodward was a unique figure in the affiars of New Orleans’ business and soical life. He was born at Demariscotta, Me., Dec. 16, 1831. Like many vigorous young natives of his birthplace he took to the sea at seventeen as an ordinary seaman in the service of the old Black Star line out of New York. His advancement to captain was rapid, and he was soon making the sailings to Calcutta, Australia, and other foreign ports. In 1849 he brought the sailing ship John H. Stetson to New Orleans. On the outbreak of the Civil War Captain Woodward enlisted in the naval service wtih the rank of volunteer lieutenant. He rose to the rank of commander and during the war he was from time to time commander of the Shawsheen, Miami, Commodore Perry, and the ironclad Atlanta, which later he commanded when he was in command of the Union fleet at the mouth of [the] James river. one of the captains treasured possessions was a personal request from Gen. U. S. Grant to bring the Atlanta to [the] James river. The funeral services and burial were held Saturday at 4 o’clock at the home of his eldest daughter Mrs. W.H. McClelland [sic], 2108 Napoleon avenue. Interment was in Metairie cemetery. | |
