Obituary | “Mrs. John B. Prados Claimed by Death. Confederate Hero’s Widow, Noted School Principal, Succumbs,” Times-Picayune, 21 Mar. 1926, p13: Mrs. John B. Prados, Civil War widow and teacher and principal in New Orleans public schools from reconstruction times until some years ago, died yesterday morning at the home of her niece, Mrs. Leon Roca, 1919 St. Claude avenue. She was 83 years old. Mrs. Prados was the wife of a Confederate hero, Major Prados, brigadier quartermaster-general on the staff o Genera Joseph E. Johnston, who was killed near Madisonville on February 27, 1863, when he boarded a schooner on the Tchefuncta river to arrest Confederate deserters and Yankee spies. When the news of his death reached New Orleans she had packed her belongings and was ready to go through Confederate lines with her two babies to join him. After the war Mrs. Prados as one of the first teachers to go into the public schools under the trying reconstruction regime. At one time she was principal of the Claiborne school, no longer in existence, and she also served as principal of the St. Philip school. Her last teaching post was in the Washington school. She saw thirty-eight years of active service. Mrs. Prados was Miss Marie Icard. She was an active member of the New Orleans chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, since its organization. Her son, Henry J. Prados, two grandchildren, Mrs. Clarence James Pitard and Rufus H. Prados, and ten great-grandchildren survive her. Funeral services will take place from her late residence this afternoon at 4 o’clock. Obituary, Times-Picayune, 21 Mar. 1926, p2: Prados—On Saturday, March 20, 1926, at 9:05 o’clock a.m., aged 85 years, Mrs. (Widow) Maj. John B. Prados (née Emma M. Icard). The relaties, friends and acquaintances of teh family, also those of her son, Henry J. Pradox, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, which will take place this Sunday, March 21, 1926, at 4 o’clock p.m, from the last residence of the deceased, 1919 St. Claude street, between Touri and Bourbon. Services at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart church. Interment private. Laudumley & Co. in charge. | |
