Military Service | Here is his record from Booth: "Tureman, T. T. P., 1st Lt. Co. G, 3rd Regt. 3rd Brig. 1st Div. La. Mil. On Roll not dated, ordered into the service of the State of Louisiana." (I assume "T." to be a typo for "Y."). "T.Z.P. Tureman" appears as a private in Greenleaf's Company, Louisiana Cavalry (Orleans Light Horse).
Obituary | Several columns on the front page of the Cincinnati Enquirer are devoted to the accident that drowned Tureman and several others. A barge collided with their launch and drowned the five riding in it. The other people who died in the accident were Edith Zins, her brother John Zins who worked at the tobacco firm with Tureman, John's girlfriend Katie Cox, and Katie Riddle. These are the sections on Tureman: ___________________________________ Cincinnati Enquirer, vol. 49, no. 172, Sunday morning, June 28, 1891, p1. "Pap" Thomas Tureman A.H. Reeder, J.B. Looker, and John McClory, a stenographer at the tobacco house [Banner Leaf Tobacco Work], also identified the body, which was taken in charge by Mayor Wright and search on the spot. A gold watch and change, $35 in money, and some very valuable papers belonging to the firm for which Tureman worked were discovered. There was a plain gold band on the deat man's hand, probably a token of his unfortunateventure on the sea of matrimony many years before. He was attrired in a dark business suit that was much the words for its thirty-six hours stay in the river. The effects found on the body were put away by Mayor Wright and Undertake Habig. . . . AT HIS OLD HOME Thomas Tureman will Lie—His Unhappy Marriage "Pap" Tureman, as he was generally known by all of the employees of the tobacco firm by whom they were employed, will be embalmed and taken at 6:30 this evening to Maysville, Ky, via the C. and O. Tureman was born in Maysville, and until the time of his death he referred to it as his home. His Aunt, Mrs. Amanda Tureman, a lady of seventy-six, has been the same as a mother to him, whose own parents, a mother and a step-father, reside in New Orleans. Tureman also leaves a wife and two children, aged respectively eleven and fourteen, in New Orleans. Ten years ago an unhappy difference separated Tureman and his wife forever. There was never any divorce between them, and Tureman never referred to the cause of the separation except to very intimate friends. He was a good business man, and had many warm friends among them. H.C. Currin now has charge of the body. He was 48 years old. He carried a $5,000 policy in Travelers' Accident Insurance Company, and this, it is supposed, will go to his children. While in this city he resided on Lawrence street and boarded at 94 East Fourth street. His remains will be buried in Maysville Monday morning. ___________________________________ A few days later this obituary was published in Maysville, in the Evening Bulletin, 29 June 1891, vol. 10, p4: THOMAS TUREMAN His Body Recovered, and His Funeral Took Place Here This Morning The remains of Thomas Tureman, who was accidentally drowned at Cincinnati last Thursday night, were recovered Saturday. In his pockets were found his gold watch, $65 in money and some valuable papers belonging to the Banner Leaf Tobacco Company, in which he was interested. The body was embalmed and was brought here on the F.F.V. last evening for interment. The funeral took place this morning at 10 o'clock at the Church of the Nativity, Rev. D.D. Chapin and Rev. W.J.E. Cox officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Maysville cemetery. Mrs. Annabelle Pearce, Miss Henrietta Tureman, Miss Amanda Tureman, and Mr. Hal C. Curran, of Cincinnati, were present at the funeral.
