LeDoux One of the Boy Soldiers of the Civil War Prominent Merchant and Citizen Many Years, Answers the Great Commander’s Call Lucien A. Ledoux, prominent merchant of the city, veteran of the Civil War and scion of one of the most distinguished Creole families of the state, died at his home, 1222 Esplanade avenue, yesterday morning at 11:45 o'clock, after an illness of two months. The funeral will take place this morning at 10 o'clock from St. Augustine's church, where the religious services will be conducted preceding interment in the Metairie cemetery. The deceased was 68 years of age and for a number of years had been prominently connected with the leading Carnival and social organizations of the city. A native of Pointe Coupee Parish, he was the son of the late Zenon Ledoux and Matilde Vignes, his father being one of the most prosperous planters of the old regime. The deceased received his early education at Spring Hill College and was still a student in that institution when the war broke out. Like many youths of his age and temperament, he cast his books away and joined the Pointe Coupee battery, organized under Captain Emile Bouanchaud.* He was later transferred to a company in the Tennessee Army and served under his late uncle, Alexandre Ledoux. After an active service of three years he was finally made prisoner and sent to Baltimore, where he was confined to the barracks for over one year, being still held a prisoner when the hostilities ended. Returning to New Orleans after the war the deceased obtained employment with the old firm of Flash, Preston, & Co.,, wholesale grocers, continuing with this company until the time when he was engaged in business for himself, founding the wholesale house of the Ledoux Company, Limited, the firm being then situated at Tchoupitoulas and South Peters streets. About ten years ago the company was liquidated and Mr. Ledoux became connected with the Star Distillery, of Cincinnati, and was the Louisiana representative of that concern up to the time of his death. Entirely devoted to his family, Mr. Ledoux was essentially a home man, though in his younger days had taken an active part in the social events of the city. He belongs to a number of local organizations and was one of the founders of the Chess, Checkers and Whist Club and was an active member of the Army of Tennessee. Besides the widow, the deceased to survive by three sons, Dr. A. Ledoux, a practicing physician of New Orleans; Lucien A. Ledoux, Jr., and Max Ledoux, and one daughter, Mrs. M. Hubert. *This would be Alcide Bouanchaud, the captain of Company A (the Point Coupee Artillery) of the Point Coupee Battalion.
