Military Service | A surgeon in the Union Army during the war. He was "appointed Asst. Surgeon of the 19th Maine Regiment, Promoted to Surgeon in the 8th Maine Regiment during the Civil War." He was promoted out of the 19th Maine on August 17, 1863; before then, he had served at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. On Feb. 22, 1866, Sec'y of War Stanton nominated him and others "for appointment [to Lieutenant Colonel] by brevet in the Volunteer force . . . for faithful and meritorious services during the war, to date from March 13, 1865."
