Notes |
- His children’s names and estimated birth dates are taken from the 1880 census.
He and his grandson, also named Brisbane, the son of his son Martin, were in a 1900 accident on St. Charles avene when they were run over by a street car; the boy was killed, and he was seriously wounded (“Shocking Tragedy on St. Charles Avenue. Napoleon Avenue Car Kills a Nine-year-Old Boy Instantly, and Seriously Injures an Aged and Respected Citizen,” Times-Picayune, 10 Feb. 1900, p8.)
The article notes that “In the ambulance, Dr. De Grange, surgeon for the Carrollton Railroad Company, and Mr. De Grange, his father, who is superintendant of the road, visited the superintendent of the police’s office, but they knew nothing of how the accident occurred. Dr. De Grange visited the body in the morgue, but simply viewed it.” This would be Dr. Joseph Tormey DeGrange and his father, Joseph DeGrange.
Also according to the article, “Mr. Turnbull was at one time administrator of the commerce in this city, he having been elected to office in 1874 fo a two years’ term. The late Governor Wiltz was at that time mayor of the city. Mr. Turnbull resided in the Sixth district, and was engaged in the cotton factorage business, where he amassed considerable wealth. He is about 60 years of age, and has been a resident for a number of years past.”
He was himself killed 5 years later when run over by a team of runaway horses. An article about his death appeared in the Times-Picayune on 22 Mar. 1905 (p5), “Third Turnbull to Meet Accidental Death Here. Brisbane Marshall Turnbull, Aged and Prominent Citizen, Killed by Runaway Team on Canal St.” The first was his son Collins, and the second was his grandson.
