The Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA), 6 Apr. 1997 BENNETT, Judge Raymond A resident of Denham Springs, he died at 2:45 p.m. Friday, April 4, 1997, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 79 and a native of Amite. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Europe with the Eighth Air Force. Visiting was held at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Visiting at the funeral home noon until religious services in the chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Timothy LeJeune, with eulogy by Zorraine Waguespack and Carolyn Larr Ott. Interment in Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery. [ . . . ] Preceded in death by parents, William Cornelius and Rachel Starns Bennett, both formerly of Amite; and first wife, Dorothy Wiltz Bennett, formerly of New Orleans. Pallbearers will be the Hon. Charles W. Borde, representing the judiciary, Deputy Marshal Gerald Stafford, representing the Denham Springs marshal's office, Capt. Joe Mac Shumate, representing the Denham Springs police department, Kerry D. Carpenter, representing the bar association, Wesley L. Kerstens, representing friends, and John L. Christy, representing the family. He was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Denham Springs. He attended Southeastern Louisiana University and LSU and received a juris doctor degree from Tulane University in 1950. He established his law practice in Denham Springs in 1958. He was elected as first judge of the DenhamSprings and Ward II city court when the court was created in 1968 and served continuously in that office for 22 years until his retirement from the court in December 1990. He was a member and past president of Livingston Parish Bar Association, member of21st Judicial District and American bar associations and VFW and was a member or honorary member of numerous other judicial, civic and professional organizations, including American Judges Association and American Association of Juvenile Judges. He was recognized in "Who's Who of American Judges." | |
