| Obituary | Obit, Times-Picayune, 27 July 2001: LeRoy E. Demarest, a retired seafood industry executive and inventor, died Tuesday at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C. He was 79. Mr. Demarest was born in Patterson and lived in New Orleans for 52 years before moving to Asheville four years ago. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and the youngest student pilot to solo at Shushan Airport, now Lakefront Airport. A former machinist for Lockheed Martin and Chrysler Aircraft companies, he retired after 30 years with Laitram Corp., a New Orleans manufacturer of seafood processing machinery. At Laitram, he was instrumental in the engineering of several successful inventions, include the machinery to peel, de-vein and grade shrimp, and held a patent on modular conveyor belting. A consultant for several seafood machinery companies, he was on the boards of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, National Fisheries Institute, and Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries, and was active in many other fisheries associations. He was awarded an Economic Development Ambassadorship by the state of Louisiana and was appointed by the U.S. Department of Interior to the Delta Region Preservation Commission, which was instrumental in the creation of Jean Lafitte National Historic Park. He was a talented artist, photographer and woodworker, and a Navy veteran of World War II. A funeral will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. | |
