Obituary, Times-Picayune, 31 July 1919, p11:
Noted for Work in Clean Politics
Joseph M, Markey, Who Died Tuesday, Buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery
Joseph M. Markey, formerly chief clerk during the office of registrar of voters during the administration of Governor Hall, died at his home at 410 South Claiborne street, early Tuesday morning, after an illness of two years from an affection [sic—infection?] of the epiglottis.
Mr. Markey was active several years go in the Third Ward in the interests of the Good Government League, and at one time was in charge of the registration canvass made by that organization, which resulted in the throwing out of thousands of illegal registrations. With a force of fifty men, Mr. Markey handled the registration of league voters during the gubernatorial campaign of 1912, and after Governor Hall’s election was appointed chief clerk to the registrar of voters.
His health failed soon after the end of Governor Hall’s term, and he retired from active participation in politics. A year ago he underwent an operation from which he never recovered, being confined to his bed since that time.
He was buried Wednesday afternoon in St. Patrick’s Cemetery No. 1, the funeral services being held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James J. Harney, 516 South Tonti street. |

Notes |
- The key to finding his parents is that his brother Nicholas named as "uncle" in his first son's obituary (hopefully "uncle" is used precisely!). His older brother Nicholas’ NOLA birth record gives a Sept. 1857 birth date, which is the same that Joseph has in the 1900 census.
Markey, Nicholas Thomas . . . Nichols & Ellen Kearney . . . M W . . . 09/27/1857 . . . 24 262
Given his birth date, it's likely that he and his brother Nicholas are twins. But, I suspect that this is an error; the 1900 census gives a birth date of Apr. 1855 for Nicholas.
On 3 Nov. 1906, he was elected Vice-President of a Third Ward citizens committee; see “Squaw Men are Not Good for Good Citizenship: Third Ward Urges its Men to Pay Poll TAx, No Matter How They Vote,” Times-Picayune 3 Nov. 1906, p5.
His name also appears in news stories about his job, for the Metropolitan Insurance company.
Confusables:
There are a number of references in newspapers during the 1890s to a Joseph P. Markey, involved with a number of civic organizations and local politics in town.
An obituary for Joseph P. Markey, patrolman, appears on 7 July 1902 in the New Orleans Item; the obit says that his only relative was his brother (7 July 1902, p5).
Another Joseph P. Markey died on 19 May 1904, aged 62, a native of Ireland (obituary, Times-Picayune, 22 May 1904).
