- His last name variously appears as Brasseur, Brasher, Brashear, Brashears, Brassieur. He arrived in Nansemond Co., Virginia in 1637. He was the first Huguenot to settle in Maryland. He called his plantation "Brashear's Purchase" in the Upper Cliffs of Calvert Co.
His wife's will names 8 children, of her and Benjamin.
Skordas gives these entries for dates of immigration to Maryland for the "Brashier" family; all are on the same folio, and they are clearly this family:
Brashier, Ann . . . 1658
Brashier, Benjamin Jr. . . . 1663
Brashier, Benjamin Sr. . . .1658
Brashier, Elizabeth . . . 1663
Brashier, John . . . 1663
Brashier, Martha . . . 1658
Brashier, Mary, Sr. . . . 1658
Brashier, Robert, Jr. . . . 1658
Brashier, Robert, Sr. . . . 1658-63
Brashier, Susannah . . . 1658
The pattern I can see here is the Benjamin Sr. and Mary his wife came in 1658; presumably this means that he came from Virginia to Maryland that year. A few children--Ann, Martha, Robert Jr., Susannah--came with them. Notably, this is all of the daughters except Elizabeth, even though Elizabeth would not yet have bee married to John Sellman at that time. Benjamin Jr., Elizabeth, John, and Robert Sr. came later.
