According to the collection description, "The elder Kellogg (1761-1842) was a native of South Hadley, Massachusetts, a graduate of Dartmouth College (1785), and a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was the first minister (1788-1811) of the Second Church in Portland, Maine, until a schism divided the church and part of the congregation left to form the Third Church, which Kellogg also served (1811-1821). After resigning his pulpit, Kellogg became a missionary to local Native Americans, keeping journals of his missions to Quoddy, Perry and Wells, Maine, including those to the Passamaquoddy tribe. He served Bowdoin as an overseer (1794-1798) and a trustee (1798-1824)."
