Phinneas (born 5-5-1778 died 18-10-1852 in 75th yr, son Israel Janney & wife, Pleasant Hague-Janney, the latter deceased, of Loudon Co., Va.); marry (1) 13-11-1799 at Upper Ridge meetinghouse, under Hopewell monthly meeting, Va., Ruth LUPTON (born 9-11-1778, daughter David Lupton & wife, Mary Hollingsworth-Lupton of Hopewell, Frederick Co., Va.; see Hopewell monthly meeting & Goose Creek monthly meeting); Phinneas Janney granted certificate to Fairfax monthly meeting, Va., 27-1-1800 by Goose Creek monthly meeting; Ruth (Lupton) Janney, 1st wife of Phinneas, granted certificate to Fairfax monthly meeting, Va., 6-1-1800 by Hopewell monthly meeting; Phinneas & Ruth (Lupton) Janney thus became charter member of Alex monthly meeting, D.C., 1802, they then living within the verge of the new Alex monthly meeting. No issue listed.
Phinneas Janney marry (2) 28-11-1811 at Alex meetinghouse, D.C., Sarah S. HARTSHORNE, born [p.758] 19-6-1785 died 1-5-1853 in her 68th yr, daughter William Hartshorne by his 1st wife, Susanna Saunders-Hartshorne, the latter deceased, of Fairfax Co., Va.; no issue listed.
Phinneas Janney was an Elder of Alex monthly meeting and took a very prominent & active part in the affairs of the meeting; a splendid memorial to him is found in the Men's Minutes. His 2nd wife. Sarah S. (Hartshorne) Janney was also an Elder of Alex monthly meeting; a memorial to her says in part: "Sarah S. Janney, daughter Wm. & Susannah Hartshorne, was born at Alexandria, Va., 19-6-1785; she was a sister to Mary (Hartshorne) Stabler, 2d wife of Edward Stabler; in 1811 she marry Phinneas Janney, with whom she lived in greatest harmony for over 40 yr—". (For the full memorial see Men's Minutes, v2, p 365) (Phinneas Janney had no issue from either wife:-Janney Genealogy). According to "The Alexandria, Va. Gazette of 1837", Phinneas Janney owned a large general store in which he specialized in rare old wines, especially Madeira & Port; also in Sweedish & Tnglish Bar Iron & Cable Iron, in all of which he was a wholesale merchant"
