He was a member of the Mass. house of representatives in 1816 and 1817, and called a shipbuilder in his daughter Mary's death record. A portrait was owned by Houghton McLellan White of Maine.

Hugh and Elizabeth emigrated from Ireland in about 1733 with their first child, about 13 years after Bryce. They ultimately settled in Gorham, Maine. He is a cousin to Bryce (though how is unknown, and so this relation isn't depicted on this site) and two of his daughters (Mary and Abigail) married two of Bryce's sons.

According to Hugh McLellan's History of Gorham,

The McLellans of Gorham are descended from Hugh and Elizabeth McLellan, whose children intermarried with those of Bryce McLellan of Portland, and James McLellan of Saco. James was a brother and Bryce a cousin to Hugh. Hugh and Elizabeth were born and married in County Antrim, in the north of Ireland. Bryce McLellan, the ancestor of the Portland branch of the family, came to this country several years before Hugh, and settled first in Wells, where he owned land July, 1720, and where several of his children were born and christened. He moved from that place to Cape Elizabeth, and about the year 1730 to Falmouth Neck.
Hugh was the son of Hugh, and Elizabeth was the daughter of Cary McLellan. Their families were remotely connected, and were descended from Sir Hugh McLellan of Argyle, Scotland, who was knighted in 1515. This branch of the McLellans migrated from Scotland (probably the southern part of Ross, where the name is still numerous) to the north of Ireland, with a colony of Scotch, some seventy or a hundred years previous to the coming to America of Hugh and Elizabeth. The story of a more specific moment in the immigrant Hugh's life can be found in in Clayton's History of Cumberland. This is a story about the deaths of the Bryant family in 1746, told by "Mrs. Abigail McLellan who died about 1821. She was a girl living with her father's family  at the time of the massacre of the Bryant family on April 19, 1746."

Hugh married Elizabeth McLellan. Elizabeth (daughter of Cary McLellan) was born in 1708 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland; died on 16 Jul 1804 in Gorham, Cumberland Co., Maine; was buried in Gorham Cemetery, Gorham, Cumberland Co., Maine. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The house is Hugh's and Elizabeth's, a picture taken in 1936 (the caption says "1736-1936"). It is the oldest brick house in Maine.

From the north of Ireland; he did not emigrate. Notice of his name is in the Boston Transcript (see under his son James); I have not see reference to Sir Hugh elsewhere; he may be apocryphal. I include him in the tree b/c it is a helpful way to show that James and Hugh are brothers.
