  1. 8.  Capt. Augustus Austere Tomlinson was born on 13 Jun 1830 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana (son of William Chisholm Tomlinson and Tabitha Marguerite Knight); died on 3 Jul 1898 in Bellville, Austin Co., Texas; was buried in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Bellville, Austin Co., Texas.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1850, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana
    • Census: 1860, Houston, Harris Co., Texas
    • Census: 1870, Houston, Harris Co., Texas
    • Census: 1880, Columbus, Colorado Co., Texas

    Notes:

The biography of his son Edgar in the Historical Review of South-East Texas says that he was born in Georgia, though this seems to be an error, perhaps for his own father William or another Tomlinson. This biography say of Augustus:

"Augustus A. Tomlinson, a native son of Georgia, when a young man in 1849 made the overland trip to California, and later returning to Louisiana he was an overseer on a sugar plantation there for a few years or until moving with his young wife to Marshall [Harrison Co.], Texas, where he became identified with wholesale and retail mercantile pursuits. In 1860 he joined the Texas Rangers, and he was stationed at Ringgold Barracks when the Civil war was inaugurated. Enlisting in the Confederate army, he served until the close of the war, and was made captain of the scouts in Colonel T. B. Likens' Regiment. In 1865 he resumed his mercantile pursuits at Harrisburg [In Houston], and he continued there for several years, but his death occurred at Bellville on the 3d of July, 1898, when sixty-eight years of age."

In the 1860 census for him—his wife is not in this household—there is a T.R. Hartman in his household, an attorney-at-law, aged 22 (b. abt. 1838). Presumably he was a relative of his wife's.

His wife does not seem to be living with him in the 1860 or 1870 census, and in 1870 the only child living with him was Willie Ruben. Apparently they were living apart at the moment. In these two censuses he was also living with his step-family the Farrows, with whom he was apparently in business (at least, in 1870 they had the same profession, "stock dealer"). In 1880 he was living in his son Edgar's household, this time with his wife.

    Birth:
In another place, AAT wrote that he was born in Jefferson Parish, LA

    Census:
age 22, planter; he is living in his mother-in-law's household, and is mistakenly named Augustus Hartman (a ditto mark is mistakenly carried down).

    Census:
aged 30, farmer, born in Louisiana

    Census:
aged 39, "stock dealer," born in Louisiana; just his son W.R. is living with him, in his step-brother L.R. Farrow's household (also a "stock dealer").

    Census:
aged 49, in his son's household; born in LA

    Notes:

Her godfather was Zephiron Theriot, her mother's brother.

I cannot find her or her son Edgar Austere on the 1860 or 1870 censuses. Willie Ruben is not apparently on the 1860 census, though in 1870 he is living wit his father.

    Census:
aged 21, living in her mother's household with her husband

    Slave Census:
    owner of 15 slaves

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Obituary: Obit, Colorado Citizen, May 28, 1891: Simpson, Emily Universal regret was expressed by our citizens last Friday morning when it became generally known that Mrs. Emily Simpson was dead. Though afflicted for many months, and herself despairing of recovery, her friends had hoped that with care and the use of remedies suggested by skilled physicians, her life might be prolonged for years yet to come. It was not to be. The hope was rudely dispelled. Mrs. Simpson was born in Fairfax county Va, August 20, 1820, was married to James H. Simpson, September 10, 1844, immigrated to Colorado county, Texas, March, 1862, and died May 22, 1891, at her home in this city. Her long life was one of quiet, unostentatious usefulness and labor for home interests, her family and friends, of devotion to her children's comfort and well being, finding within the home, its attachents and adornments the greatest meed of her happiness--the fruition of her highest desire. Her malady was borne with the resignation of inate courage and fortitude enshrined to the decrees of an All wise Power; and in her last days she "put her house in order" for her expected departure. To her gentle spirit what the world terms "grim death" came as a longed for messenger of peace, the summons of relief, the invitatiion to rest. Her remains were transferred to Weimar and interred beside her husband, who preceded her over a decade ago "to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler e'er returns," Rev. G. H. Collins of the Methodist church conducting services at the residence here, and at the Odd Fellow's cemetery in Weimar, assisted by Rev. Mr. Haynie. a large concourse of relatives and friends were present at the sad rites. A son and three daughters are left to mourn their irreparable loss. The Citizen extends sincere condolence. "The night-dew that falls, though in silence it weeps, Shall brighten with verdure the grave where she sleeps; And the tear that we shed, though in secret it rolls, Shall long keep her memory green in our souls"

    Notes:

Johannes Carl von Rosenberg was born at Eckitten Estate in 1826, where his mother died when he was a few weeks old. The Veithofer-Froelich grandmother (Johanna Dorothea Viethofer, his maternal grandmother) beloved by all, took him home immediately after the funeral and cared for him until the remarriage of his father four years later.

Johannes immigrated to America with his family in 1849. After Johannes married Julie Groos in 1850, they lived on a farm that was part of Nassau Plantation, which he had cultivated while he boarded with his sister Hannchen Hellmuth nearby. Later he bought a larger farm at Evergreen, then Lee County, now Washington County.

At his return he decided to give up farming and moved to Round Top, where the family resided until his wife died in 1894. In Round Top he founded a mercantile business and also an inn, which was widely known to travelers in that day.

After 1894 he retired and lived with his two unmarried daughters, Hulda and Minnchen, until his death at the age of eighty. Johannes Carl died in l906 and was buried in the new cemetery in La Grange. There his wife was soon re-interred by his side.

    Notes:

His ancestry in Germany is a stumper.

He was 17 when he immigrated, according to family history, arriving in Texas in 1856. Dates among records seem to vary a bit, however. He had apparently been educated as an architect in Germany. I don't know of any other family members of his who came over, nor of his parents. His family is a brick wall.

He became an overseer on the Crump plantation on the Brazos River in Austin Co., TX. He married two cousins. The first was Johanna Umland, daughter of Heinrich. He second married Elise Umland, daughter of Heinrich’s brother Johann.

He re-visited Germany in 1886. The passport application show his town of origin in Germany, Auma, now in Thuringen. Several notes appeared in newspapers about the trip. For instance, in the San. Antonio Light, 13 May 1886: "Carl Brossman, eight years County Treasurer of Austin county, is on his way to visit his mother in Germany, whom he has not seen for 30 years." Family history says that he was traveling a friend Carl "Schauerhaume." His return travel manifest shows him travelling with a Carl Schauermann, aged 22.

He appears twice on the 1900 census. The first is in Bexar Co. as (mistakenly) aged 43. The second is with his family, aged 63, in Bellville, Austin Co. The first was his physical location. He died in the San Antonio Insane Asylum, where, according to his death record, he had been living since June 1895.

    Birth:
His 1886 Passport application gives his birthdate as 27 March 1837. It also gives his place of birth as "Auma, Germany," which corresponds with family history.

    Immigration:
Date according to 1900 census. In U.S. for 47 years. No Naturalization indicated.

    Immigration:
He seems to have traveled back and forth several times in the 1850s. The 1900 census gives his immigration date as 1853. Alma von Rosenberg Tomlinson gives his immigration date as 1856.

    Census:
carpenter; born in Germany; living in the household of F.W. Brandis (aged 27), also a carpenter from Germany. Another person in the household of L.W. Schlotman, carpenter, aged 21 from Germany.

    Census:
carpenter; real estate 2,000, pers. estate 275; born in Saxony; both parents of foreign birth; US Citizen

    Census:
aged 43, county treasurer; born in Saxony

    Passport Application:
According to this he was a naturalized citizen.

    Census:
patient, aged 43 [sic], from Germany; no information on parents; U.S. Citizen

    Census:
    aged 63 (born March 1837?); married 34 years;

    Died:
The certificate says that he died in the San Antonio insane asylum, where he had been living since 11 June 1895. It also says that he was a U.S. Citizen.

    • Census: 1920, Austin Co., Texas

    Notes:

The name also appears as "Umbland" or "Umlang," esp. in newspapers.

Her family on her father and mother’s side were all from Lower Saxony, her father’s family from Kehdingen and her mother from Cuxhaven. Both lie in northern parts of the area known as the Elbe-Weser triangle.

Family notes say that she was from "Freyburg, Hanover, Germany,” not to be confused with the university town. See the German Wikipedia page on Königreich Hannover. Freiburg was part of Kehdingen in the northwest of Lower Saxony. The Kingdom of Hanover was formed in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna, and lost its independence to Prussia in 1866.

She immigrated to Texas in 1856, at age 8 with her family. Nothing is known of her life. No obituary is apparent. All four of her siblings died fairly young.

    Immigration:

Generation: 5

  1. 16.  William Chisholm Tomlinson was born on 5 May 1805 in Georgia; died on 30 May 1836 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Obituary: Death Notice, True American (New Orleans, LA), 2 June 1836, p2: DIED - at Baton Rouge, on the 30th ult. of typhus fever, Wm. C. Tomlinson, a native of Geo. The Georgia and Franklin papers will please copy the above.

    Notes:

This person's ancestry is a stumper! Can anyone help? He is on the Louisiana Mysteries page. The name also appears as Tumblinson, Tamlinson, Tumbleston, Tomelson, Tomblenson, Tomblesson, Thompson.

Other Tomlinsons, maybe or maybe not related:

According to family researcher Karen Theriot, a son of Thomas Tomlinson and "Geuty" (Gertrude or Margaret?) named Jesse "acted as sponsor or witness on William's family records." Hebert's Southwest Lousiana Records names Jesse's father as Thomas Tombleson and Jesse's mother as "Guerty." Jesse Tomlinson appears elsewhere on this site connected via other family in St. Mary Parish. See him for more information.

William Chisholm Tomlinson, who was born in 1805, would have been of an age to be one of the 25-40 year-old men in Jesse Tomlinson’s household in the 1830 census. He was not there, though, in 1820, when he would have been 15.

Nathaniel and Elizabeth/Isabel Tomlinson from Natchez appear in New Orleans judicial records around the year 1800.

John Chappell Tomlinson died in 1845 in Nacogdoches, m. to Margaret. His family was from Georgia. Leonard Tomlinson was a son of John Chappell. A biography of William Chisholm's grandson Edgar Austere says that William Chisholm's family was from in Georgia, as does his obituary. William Chisholm's wife Tabitha Knight appears as a citizen in the Republic of Texas (1836-1845), along with "Leonard Tomlinson" and "Aaron Tomlinson." I have not seen evidence to connect John Chappell's family to William Chisholm's, however.

Tomlinsons appear in newspapers before 1825 in Georgia newspapers.

There is a Tomlinson Cemetery in Heflin, Bienville Parish, Louisiana. There was a Chisholm family from St. Landry Parish.

I have seen no evidence to connect these three families - Jesse's, William Chisholm's, and John Chappell's.

    Birth:
    according to his obit.

William married Tabitha Marguerite Knight on 5 Jun 1827 in Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. Tabitha (daughter of William Knight and Catherine Russ) was born on 16 Oct 1807 in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana; was christened on 7 Dec 1807 in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana; died on 26 Nov 1890 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas; was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis Co., Texas. Remains will reach Austin this morning and be buried from the Christian church at 9:15 a.m. Friends of family requested to attend.

    • Census: 1860, Houston, Harris Co., Texas
    • Census: 1880, Austin, Travis Co., Texas

    Notes:

Her father’s and mother’s names, William and Catherine, appear on her marriage records.

She was married to her second husband Thomas Baker in Louisiana in 1837. By 1840 she was living in Galveston.

Her husband John Farrow's three children were all born in the 1840s, so I assume that she was not their biological parent. She is listed as their mother on the 1850 census.

She appears as a citizen in the Republic of Texas (1836-1845), along with a "Leonard Tomlinson" and an "Aaron Tomlinson." The application was made by Francis G. McDonald (I3907). This is the narrative:

"Tabitha Marguerite Knight was born 16 Oct. 1807. She was baptized 7 Dec. 1807 in St. Martinville, La. Her parents were William Knight and Catherine Russ. Tabitha married William Chisholm Tomlinson (b. 5 May 1805) in St. Mary Parish, La 6 June 1827. They had 5 children. . . . William Chisholm Tomlinson died 25 May 1836 and Tabitha remarried to [her second husband] Thomas C. Baker 17 Feb. 1837 in St. Mary Parish, La.
"Tabitha came to Texas and was living in Beaumont in 1838, and on 24 Oct. 1838 received grant of 640 acres from the Republic of Texas. In 1850 she married [her fifth husband] John Madison Farrow in Galveston. She lived in Beaumont, Galveston, and San Antonio; and died in San Antonio 26 Nov. 1890 and is buried on Lot 353 Sec. 1 of Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Her 2 Tomlinson sons served as officers in the Confederate Army (1861-1865)."

  3. 18.  Michael Hartman was born in Nov 1800 in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana; was christened on 9 Nov 1802 in Bayou Teche, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana (son of Johann Peter Hartman, Sr. and Anna Ryan); died on 14 Aug 1849 in Plattenville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Obituary: Obit., The Planters' Banner (Franklin, Attakapas Co., LA), August 16, 1849: On the 14th inst., Michael Hartman of Plattenville.

    Notes:

According to the McDonald biography of Augustus Tomlinson (available on the Texas Histories page), evidence of their children and parents comes from Southwest Louisiana Records, rev. by Donald J. Hébert. I have yet to consult this myself.

How and why did his family move from Germany and Pennsylvania to Louisiana? I am not sure of how this family's story works as yet. There is work on German settlement (the "German Coast") in Louisiana which I have not yet consulted. This family apparently came from Germany via Pennsylvania; I don't know how that plays into the the German Coast settlers. Perhaps the Hartmans moved because they had family in Louisiana?

    > A Jacob and a James and an Andrew Hartman also appear in newspapers (The Planter's Journal, Franklin, Attakapas Co., around 1849-1853; see on Chronicling America.

Michael married Mary Leonese Theriot on 30 Jan 1827 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. 4. 19.  Mary Leonese Theriot was born on 14 May 1809 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana; was christened on 24 Jun 1810 in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana (daughter of Charles Theriot and Rosalie le Blanc); died after 1879.

    • Census: 1860, St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana
    • Census: 1880, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana

    Notes:

The family name is also spelled "Terriot."

The Theriot and Le Blanc familes which comprise her ancestry were thoroughly Acadian, Mary's grandparents and great-grandparents having emigrated from Acadia (now called Nova Scotia) due to the forced expulsion connected to the French and Indian War (1754-63). They eventually settled west of New Orleans in central/south Louisiana, in what are now St. Charles, St. James, St. Martin, and St. Mary Parishes.

There are lots of sites on Acadian ( > Cajun) ancestry. For two good ones, see:

    • Immigration: Dec 1849, Galveston, Galveston Co., Texas
    • Census: 1850, Fayette Co., Texas
    • Census: 1860, Fayette Co., Texas

    Notes:

Peter Carl Johann von Rosenberg, soldier of Waterloo and pioneer of Texas, was born at "Eckitten", near Memel in East Prussia, on October 2, 1794. He was nine years old when his parents were divorced and we know nothing of his early life and education.

In 1819 he inherited the "Eckitten" estate on the death of his widowed stepmother, and the same year he married Johanna Dorothea Frölich. They had four children before she died in 1826.

In 1830 Rosenberg married Amanda Fallier, by whom he had five more children. They also adopted his niece, Libussa Frölich.

In June 1849 Rosenberg's eldest son, Carl Wilhelm von Roseberg, a royal architect, was proscribed because of his outspoken democratic ideas and was barred from further employment with the government. He thus decided to emigrate to Texas. When Carl was unable to dissuade his son, he concluded that the entire family should emigrate together. He had a historical connection to Texas: his brother Ernst Ludwig was one of the first Germans in Texas with the Long expedition of 1821 and was killed in Mexico in 1826.

From Vol. 1 of The von Rosenberg Family of Texas (8): "Peter Carl [the immigrant], the grandson of Sigismund Gustav, also chose to live at "Eckitten", although "Garossen" was not sold and was occupied by Peter Carl's brother Gustav and his wife Ida. Gustave and Ida reared, at "Garossen", two orphaned sisters of Eleanore von Rosenberg-Froelich, the sisters of LIbussa Froelich who was brought to America when she as 10 years old."

According to Alma Julie's notes on these children, "Ida von Ruckeshall-von Rosenberg [the third wife wife of Peter Carl's oldest brother Gustav Gotthard] was repeatedly referred to as the aunt and Guardian of the Froelich girls, who became orphans and went to old Garossen and then to Russia as Governesses and never returned. They were sisters of Libussa Froelich who came to Texas, adopted by Peter Carl Johann von Rosenberg, and she never saw her immediate family again!"

Peter Carl resigned his commission as a reserve lieutenant in the Prussian Reserve Army, and in October 1849 the family sailed from Bremen aboard the "Franziska"; they landed in Galveston in early December and traveled by mail coach and wagon down the coast to the mouth of the Brazos River. There they boarded the "Washington" and sailed up the Brazos to San Felipe de Austin. Carl and Wilhelm traveled to Bastrop and La Grange seeking to purchase a farm. Carl purchased the manor and 800 acres of Nassau Farm, a plantation in Fayette County that had been owned by the Adelsverein. He was a Freidenker (freethinker), and in his letters back to friends in Europe, he often wrote of the freedom he and his family enjoyed in Texas and America.

Carl and Amanda prospered on the farm and stayed there until all the children were grown. In 1861 they moved to a small home in Round Top, where Carl stayed after Amanda's death in 1864. Near the time of his death, he stayed with his daughter, Caroline Meerscheidt, in La Grange. He died of typhoid fever in La Grange on October 19, 1866.

Descendants in the first few generations after Peter Carl live in various towns around Fayette Co. (which sits about half-way between Houston and Austin), including La Grange, Round Top, Fayetteville, Colorado City. Family also lived in Hallettsville, just south in Lavaca Co.; in Bellville, just east in Austin Co.; and in towns just to the southeast in Colorado Co.

There are some genealogical materials for this family in the "Andrew Forest Muir papers" at the Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library, Rice University, Houston, TX (see Box 27, folder 4: "Baker, Joe H. Genealogy materials and notes on related families on central and southeast Texas: Menke, Bettis, von Rosenberg, Baker, Affleck, and Hass (late 18th through 20th centuries)"). I'm not sure which branch of the family this would be.

    Notes:

The name also appears as "Umbland" or "Umblang," esp. in newspapers.

He immigrated with his father to Texas in 1853. Family notes say that he was from "Freyburg, Hanover, Germany." Freiburg was part of Kehdingen in what is now Lower Saxony. "Hanover" refers to the Electorate and then (after 1814) the Kingdom of Hanover.

His ancestors mostly derive from this region of Lower Saxony on the western bank of the Elbe river called the "Elbe-Weser triangle," especially the northern part of it.

He and his older brother Heinrich are mentioned in the Handbook of Texas on-line as cabinet makers; he specialized in undertaking, and making coffins. They are recorded in the 1880 census as residing in Chappell Hill, Washington Co., Texas.

His two oldest sons Jacob and Heinrich died of yellow fever in 1867. Both are also said to have served in the CSA.

    Notes:

Her father is named Jacob on her marriage record. Family history says she was from Obendorf Parish in Hanover. "Oberndorf" is just to the east of Freiburg, where her husband's family originated in northern Lower Saxony. Her family ran a textile mill, and grew flax. She had a small Luther Bible inscribed "to Metta Möller from her "lehrer," teacher, in 1829, when 8 years of age.

Her name and her father's name are spelled "Möller" on her marriage record, and family history records this as the spelling. Her own 1821 birth record spells her family's last name as "Müller." The two spellings were almost interchangeable. Her given name, her father's name, the specific date (5 Jan. 1821), and the place all match, however, so this birth record will be her's.

Her family, like her husband's, comes from the region of Lower Saxony on the western bank of the Elbe river called the "Elbe-Weser triangle," especially the northern part of it.

Her family lived in a house on the site of St. Mary's Church in Bellville. This family is all buried in the same cemetery in Chappell Hill, Texas. Names on findagrave only use initials.

  7. 40.  John Simpson was born on 7 Nov 1739 in Virginia (son of Gilbert Simpson, Sr. and Elizabeth Williams); died on 20 Apr 1801 in Loudoun Co., Virginia; was buried in "Coon Skin Farm", Loudoun Co., Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Farmer

    Notes:

I rely on Niebling for the connection between this Gilbert and his son John, whose information is more complete than anyone else's that I've seen. The confusion between the three Gilbert Simpsons is a notorious genealogical problem, and Neibling has worked extensively on them. Please refer to his work for full documentation.

John Simpsons owned a farm named "Coon Skin" farm, on Goose Creek, near Carter's Mill, Loudon Co., VA.

According to the volumes of will abstracts between 1757-1800 there are no Simpson (or Hixson, or Isch) wills recorded in Loudoun Co. According to the Simpson family history compiled by J.H. Simpson (d. 1977), he always lived in Loudoun Co.

I've seen on-line notes which give him ancestry in Fairfax Co., VA, and before that in Charles Co., Maryland.

Harry Wright Newman, in The Maryland Semmes and Kindred Families, describes a Simpson family which descends from Thomas Simpson of St. Thomas, Charles County; I don't see any possibiity in the volume, however, of a John Simpson who migrates to Loudoun County, or Virginia at all. Since his wife, however, seems to be related to Charles County families, this still might be possible.

There is another possible ancestry. Other internet sources claim that he was a Scottish immigrant who settled on Dogues Neck in Fairfax Co., on the Potomac River. The same information comes from the reliable S268, the Gulick family history, which mentions that "Mary Simpson [John and Mary's grand-daughter] was a granddaughter of John Simpson and Mary More. John Simpson came from Scotland and was the ancestor in America of this Simpson Line" (275). However, there is no documentary evidence provided here.

John married Mary Moore in 1773. Mary (daughter of Samuel Moore and Charity Courts) was born about 1751; died before 11 Jul 1814 in Loudoun Co., Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 41.  Mary Moore was born about 1751 (daughter of Samuel Moore and Charity Courts); died before 11 Jul 1814 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

According to researcher Robert NIebliing: "Mary is a proven daughter of Samuel Moore. Loudoun County Deed Book x, pages 424 and 425 dated 13 April, 1797 record that Samuel Moore of Fauquier County, VA initiated two deeds of gift. One deeded two slaves named Henney and Cornelius to his daughter Mary Simpson of Loudoun and the other, one slave named Nan to his daughter, Ann Hendley Chinn of Loudoun. Witnesses were Richard Chinn and Thomas Chinn. The deeds were recorded 10 July, 1797.

"Proof that the Mary in this deed is identical to the Mary Moore who married John Simpson is found in the inventory of John estate dated 23 February, 1803 which includes "One Negro boy named Cornelius--80 pounds" and "One Negro woman named Henney--60 pounds." In other words, the same slaves that were in the deed of gift.

"Proof that this Mary is the daughter of Samuel Moore is found in the listing of Samuel Moore's heirs in a Mercer County Kentucky deed dated 23 March, 1808 which includes Mary Simpson and Thomas Chinn and his wife, Ann H.

"Proof that Mary Simpson died in Loudoun County is found in her will dated 25 April, 1814 and proved 11 July, 1814."

    Notes:

I have seen her parents listed as Christian King and Margaret Toot, but without any evidence. Among other issues, the reported date of her mother Margaret's birth would only make her 6 when Susannah was born, an impossibility. The connection from her to her parents--and thus to a Dutte family ancestry--can only be rated as tentative to the point of confusion.

    Notes:

He is often recorded as "John, Jr." because his father Vincent apparently had a brother named John who was "John, Sr."

From the Dye listserv: "The cemetery is behind the Methodist Church on the brow of the hill south of Manassas, Prince William County. 284,757 - 4290,172 on my GPS Unit. See: One Hundred Old Cemeteries of Prince William County, VA, E. R. Conner, pages 107-111. "

John married Mary Hixson about 1774. Mary (daughter of Benjamin Hixson, Jr. and Sara Hutchinson) was born about 1752; died in Mar 1832. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  13. 46.  Rut Johnson, Jr. was born before 1748 (son of Rutger Johnson, Sr. and ? Morrell); died in Jan 1825 in Prince William Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

He moved from New Jersey to Virginia, apparently with his father.

From Prince William, Stories . . .: , in a section about a tour on Route 234 north from Dumfries; this is just south of the Manassas battlefield:

"At 16.7 m. [from Dumfries] is CLOVER HILL (L). In 1740 Patrick Hamrick patented 118 acres of land. In the grant the statement is make the Hamrick then owned the adjecent tract of 760 acres, which had been first granted to Roger Day and re-granted in 1725 to Henry McDonnac, who had married Day's widow. Another deed shows that he land here was purchased in 1770 from "Patrick Hambrick, planter, by Rutt Johnson, farmer." Rutt Johnson was among the band of immigrants from New Jersey who moved to Prince William. He seems to have been a forester and orchardist as well as a farmer, for he set aside one field in which he planted acorns and raised a ‘crop' of oak trees and other in which he set out apples.
In the old burial ground, which the Johnsons found on the place, are many illegible stones. Two inscriptions can be read, however, one bearing initials and the other a legend, "in memory of Joseph Sims. D. in 1790 in the 49th year of his age."

Rut married Lydia Hixson. Lydia (daughter of Benjamin Hixson, Jr. and Sara Hutchinson) was born in New Jersey; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  15. 48.  Otto Bohlschwing von Rosenberg was born in 1768 in Dünaburg, East Prussia (Daugavpils, Latvia) (son of Sigismund Gustav von Rosenberg and Barbara von Bohlschwing); died on 17 Dec 1817; was buried in "Eckitten", near Memel, East Prussia.

    Notes:

Note the tangled marriages among his children and the Froelichs.

These notes are from Alma von Rosenberg about a divorce in the family in 1803:

"The inheritor and owner of Eckitten and Raddeilen Estates in 1750 was Sigismund Gustav von Rosenberg. His first son was Otto (1776-1871) who also later inherited and owned "Eckitten" and "Raddeilen," married three times, and was divorced twice! This Otto von Rosenberg was the father of our Pioneer father, Peter Carl Johann von Rosenberg and we had thought there were no divorces in that day, having constantly thought about how such would be handled for Generation Four! when our next book of the family would be published.
Of Otto's first wife there is no record, no children.
Of the second wife, Maria Wilhelmine von Stempel, there were nine children after a marriage of twelve years and then a divorce in 1802.
Of the third wife, Cathrine von Barkenhagen there were seven children, only one daugher, Emelie, was ever mentioned, and then only one time in the Froelich Book."

According to von Rosenberg family historian Jon Koenig, “Otto von Rosenberg was born on the Radeilen estate which was near the village of Krottingen near Memel in Kurland, East Prussia.  He was a Baron of the East Prussian nobility. He married three times and was divorced twice. Upon the dissolutioion of his second marriage to Maria Wilhelmine von Stempel, he kept the Eckitten estate as well as a mill on the estate, and a brewery and hotel in Memel which he had received as a part of the dowery from the von Stempel family. He was appointed the Royal Forester of the Royal Braslausten Estate in the then Kingdom of Prussia by King Friedrich Wilhelm III towards the end of his life. The estate was located far east of Memel near the village of Sarasen (now present day Jeziorosy in Lithuania). Shortly after his arrival on the Royal Estate with his second wife, Catharina Borkenhagen and their children, Baron Otto suffered a stroke and was buried three days later in the local Lutheran churchyard. He was a Lieutenant in the Infantry of the Royal Prussian Army.”

Otto married Marie Wilhelmine von Stempel on 21 Oct 1791 in "Eckitten", near Memel, East Prussia, and was divorced in 1803. Marie (daughter of Gotthard Melchior Johann von Stempel and Maria Charlotta von Stempel) was born on 6 Jul 1768; died in 1831. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His will was signed by J.F.A. Heinzelman, presumably a relation of his son Heinrich's wife, and Heinrich Dahlgrün.

  25. 62.  Jacob Müller (son of Jacob Müller); and died.

    Notes:

His name "Jacob Möller" appears on his daughter's marriage record. He is named Jacob son of Jacob on his marriage record.

Records give the place name "Oberndorf, Neuhaus an der Oste, Hanover, Prussia" after about 1783. Before that, the place name is "Oberndorf, Cuxhaven, Niedersachsen, Deutschland." Cuxhaven and Neuhaus are both larger towns near Oberndorf.

Jacob married Margaretha Elisabeth von Spreckelsen in 1814 in Oberndorf, Cuxhaven, Lower Saxony, Germany. 1. 68.  Jacob Knight was born in Pennsylvania (son of Philip Knight); died on 29 Nov 1819 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1790, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania
    • Probate: 1819, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana

    Notes:

Ganier records the name of his father.

He may have been in Bucks Co. in the 1790 census; there is one white male who is HOH, four other white males, and two white females, which would match his family (page 112). Ganier notes that "the following appear in 1790 census records of Bucks Co., Pennsylvania: Jacob Knight, John Horner, Henry Knight, William Tomlinson, William Hamilton, Peter Hartman, Jacob Hartman - all names that occur in this area of Louisiana" (3). It's a possibility, if they migrated west and then south via the Ohio and Mississippi. Jacob, however, purchased land in Louisiana in 1790.

I cannot find him in the 1800 census. Lousiana would not have been recorded then.

Ganier gives Jacob and Solomon as children of his first wife, Sarah Winn (or Wind). Solomon married Rachel Hamilton in St. Mary Parish in 1814.. Ganier names Henry, William, Elizabeth, and Michel are children of his second wife Catherine. This concurs with Sanders as the information from his will. Joseph's name does not appear in his father's will.

Jacob married Catherine Christiana Infeld. Catherine (daughter of Joseph Michael Infeld and Christina Winters) was born about 1760 in Strasbourg, Grand Est, Bas-Rhin, France; died about 1825 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Also "Emfeld," "Enfield." "Enfile" and "Enfil" appear in Louisiana records (Ganier uses it), a French version of what was a German name.

    Children:
    1. Elizabeth J. "Eliza" Knight died on 21 Nov 1850 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.
    2. Henry Knight was born about 1778 in Fort Pitt [Pittsburgh], Pennsylvania; died in Mar 1847 in Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.

  4. 71.  Winnifred West was born about 1756 in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana (daughter of Nathaniel West and Mary Unity Sellers); died about 1799.

    Notes:

She and her husband were planters in the Baton Rouge region.

She and her husband appear in the 1786 Spanish census She left a succession document when she died in 1799. It is preserved in the "Spanish West Florida Records (SPWF), the official court records of the Royal Spanish government of colonial Louisiana, 1782-1816, at Louisiana State University’s Hill Memorial Library in Baton Rouge. The court records were originally written in Spanish and were translated into English and transcribed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. The transcribed records (over 7,000 pages) include slave sales, emancipation records, succession inventories, wills, conveyance records, criminal cases, and civil cases that include documentation for enslaved individuals who were affiliated with MMP [Magnolia Mound Plantation]." This note is from Roe's dissertation.

  7. 74.  John Louis Ryan and died.

    Notes:

Also very possibly Ring, Rime, Rine, R(a)ian, Rianine, Rienguen. "Rienguen" seems to be a phonetic version of "Ryan" transcribed by a French (Louisiana) speaker.

  13. 80.  Gilbert Simpson, Sr. was born about 1699 in Charles Co., Maryland (son of John Simpson and Elizabeth).

    Notes:

I rely on Niebling for the connection between this Gilbert and his son John, whose information is more complete than anyone else's that I've seen.

Sometime before August 1741 he migrated across the Potomac to Fairfax Co., Virginia.

Gilbert married Elizabeth Williams before 1730. Elizabeth (daughter of James Williams and Elizabeth Tennison) died about 1785. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  15. 82.  Samuel Moore was born about 1724 in Charles Co., Maryland (son of William Moore and Mary Cofer); died before 23 Mar 1808 in Mercer Co., Kentucky.

    Notes:

Dates need substantiation. He is on the Maryland Mysteries page under Charles County.

He was his wife's Charity's third husband, and married again after she died.

"Mary Simpson" is mentioned in his estate settlement (dated 23 Mar. 1808, Mercer Co., KY). This indenture, a sale of land from his estate, names his children and their spouses.

(Some web sources record his ancestry, via a mother named "Abigail Gilman," way back to some noble families in England. This is a very, very dubious connection; Abigail Gilman seems instead to have been from from Exeter, New Hampshire, and her husband seems to have actually been "Samuel Thing.")

    Died:
His estate was settled in Mercer Co., anyway.

Samuel married Charity Courts on 18 Nov 1748. Charity (daughter of Hon. John Courts, III and Elizabeth Barnes) was born in 1712; died before 1768 in Charles Co., Maryland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  16. 83.  Charity Courts was born in 1712 (daughter of Hon. John Courts, III and Elizabeth Barnes); died before 1768 in Charles Co., Maryland.

    Notes:

Info about her varies greatly. I see her listed as the daughter of Ann Harrison, or Elizabeth Barnes, or Elizabeth Yate (Yates, Yeates)? I've also seen her last name as Coates.

This family seens to be where the name "Hendley" originates from, which descends though the Simpsons to the Tomlinsons; note the children of Charity Courts via her second and third husbands.

She appears on the Maryland Mysteries page under Charles County.

    Children:
    1. Henley Moore was born about 1749.
    2. 41. Mary Moore was born about 1751; died before 11 Jul 1814 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.

    • Naturalization: 28 Aug 1763, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania
    • Probate: 20 Oct 1780, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania

    Notes:

Have also seen "Saverne area, Bas-Rhin, Alsace" as a birth place.

He appears on the 1771 Lancaster Borough Proprietary Tax Lists with 1 horse and 1 cattle, tax "8.6" (PA Archives ser. 3, vol. 17--rootsweb database).

There is a land indenture from Peter Ish (and wife Philipina) to John Miller in Lancaster Co, PA on March 14, 1777

Peter Isch appears 7 times in the Ancestry.com database “Pennsylvania Church Records - Adams, Berks, and Lancaster Counties, 1729-1881” as a father at a baptism, and 3 times as a sponsor. No names are given about who he was standing for or sponsoring. All were at the First Reformed Congregation at Lancaster, PA. All the events were between 1753 and 1758.

His will was probated Oct. 20, 1780 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

    Birth:
    In the Lower Alsace region

    Immigration:
    on the “Phoenix”

Peter married Philippina. Philippina was born about 1740; died before 1812. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  18. 85.  Philippina was born about 1740; died before 1812.

    1. 43. Susannah King was born on 15 Aug 1773 in Pennsylvania; died in 1847 in Loudoun Co., Virginia; was buried in Ish Family Cemetery, Aldie, Loudoun Co., Virginia.

  20. 88.  Vincent A. Dye was born on 20 Jul 1726 in Staten Island, New York City, New York (son of John Laurens Dye and Anne ? Brown); died in 1796 in Prince William Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

According to the compilation Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, series 1, vol. 2 (page 311), comp. Dorothy Ford Wulfect, (Naugatuck, CN:pub. by the author, 1963), Vincent Dye was born abt. 1715; her reference is to the Hartford CT Times Genealogy Page (30 Aug. 1958).

He married Sarah Artepe before he left. Because this couple had 15 children they are an important originary family for much work on the subsequent Dyes. They stayed in New Jersey until after the Revolution, and all their children were born. He then bu 1782 migrated from New Jersey to Prince William Co., VA. He located himself just south of what is now Manassas.

I don't know that he was in the Revolutionary War, but brothers and cousins of his were.

His will is recorded in Prince William County:
    Given Name: Vincent
    Surname: Dye
    Year of first entry: 1796

Vincent married Sara Artepe on 1 Sep 1746 in Middlesex Co., New Jersey. Sara was born on 9 Jan 1727 in Somerset Co., New Jersey; died on 2 Oct 1797 in Prince William Co., Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  21. 89.  Sara Artepe was born on 9 Jan 1727 in Somerset Co., New Jersey; died on 2 Oct 1797 in Prince William Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

I've seen her as "Sarah Artesse" who was the daughter of Benjamin Hixson and Sarah Hutchinson, but these are the parents of Mary Hixson, the wife of Vincent's son John "Hickory" Dye. For her name, note the marriage certificate, attached, which gives her as "Sarah Artepe." There is no evidence that Artepe is a married name. To the contrary: she is called "spinster" on her marriage license.

Her will is recorded in Prince William County for 1798:

    Notes:

He (or possibly his son) was the first to actually bear the "Esthland" Arms; his branch is traced from his great-grandfather Gotthard-Wilhelm von Rosenberg.

Why the new arms? It has to do with this branch's abandonment of estates they held; they are in fact a matter of some disgrace. This is from Vol. 1 of The von Rosenberg Family of Texas (8):

"The lineage was indigenous to Kurland but not to Esthland. The barons living in Kurland at Garossen Estate from 1500 AD on bought more and more property in Esthland; after about 1741 other estates appear on the charts (from the Froelich book) especially near Ragnit and Memel, such as "Wintzheim," "Holwigshof," "Laugsch," and the more familiar "Raddeilen" and "Eckitten." Friederich Wilhelm von Rosenberg was the first owner of the Raddeilen near Memel, but he also acquired other estates. The first owner of Eckitten was Wilhelm's son Sigismund Gustav, who acquired it in 1749.

"In 1786, for some cause related to the Krottingen War, the family emigrated from the Garossen Estate in Esthland. This ‘departure by seal' caused them to be known ‘in disgrace' for leaving an old home in a native land. For fighting in the Krottingen War and other reasons the family, or at least Otto (b. 1772), was granted more charges to be used on the coat of arms; but it had to include the ‘lion rampant regardant'--looking backward--because the family had affronted the old arms by leaving it. By permission of the College of Arms the name was changed from Kurland to Esthland, a new grant was given, but the old one retained in case any descendant desired to use it. Otto inherited Eckitten in 1793 and chose to live there instead of at Garossen because the lands were better and the surroundings and educational opportunities better for children.

"Peter Carl [the immigrant], the grandson of Sigismund Gustav, also chose to live at Eckitten, although Garossen was not sold and was occupied by Peter Carl's brother Gustav and his wife Ida. Gustave and Ida reared, at Garossen, two orphaned sisters of Eleanore von Rosenberg-Froelich, the sisters of LIbussa Froelich who was broght to America when she as 10 years old."

    Notes:

The name was formerly "Voithofer." It appears this way in the Austrian records, and it changed with this generation, presumably with the move to Königsberg. According to "the church book of the free evangelical pastors in Goldegg in Pongau," his birthdate was 24 Feb. 1726; according to his wife's recollections the date was 1730.

According to the Froelich history, "following the expulsion of all Protestants from Salzburg [Austria] Michl Voithofer also left with his mother, his wife, 2 children (Martin and Anna)—Andreas had already died in 1729—and with diverse other relatives with the name Veithofer, in all 25 persons: 4 men, 4 women, 11 children, 2 servingment, and 4 maids. They emigrated to Prussia and arrived in Königsberg with their own kitchenware on November 12, 1732."

According to the Froelich History, he "probably studied pedagogy in Königsberg and later became Precentor, Adjunct Pastor, and Lithuanian Pastor. The introduction for him [at some moment introducing him as a pastor] is word for word: [']Martin Veithofer, a Salzburger, born in Goldegg 1730 on Palm Sunday, previously—since 1758—Precenter at the Lithuanian church in Memel, was June 14, 1771 ordained as adjunct of Pastor Johann Samuel Hassenstein and on the seventh Sunday after Trinity he was introducted, continuing until 1773.[']"

According to his wife's journal, "In the year 1787 God sent me great sorrow as my dear husband became blind in both eyes. Oh Master, You all-knowing God! You also knew then the pain in my heart and our great crying and imploring you. You were not spared my personal sighs. But as You in Your word relenteth and deigneth to hear, so You also brough to us, since no one here knew how to advise and help us, an eye doctor from Saxony who said it was cataracts and there is no help but to cut out the cataract. This was done on the 14th of April 1798. Afterwards he was tied and had to lie still on his back 9 days. This was very difficult but God helpd us to overcome although it was still three months before his eyes were healthy."

    Notes:

His name is also Ezekias and Ezechias.

Hezekiah Russ appears as the buyer (from John Russ) of one slave named Bob in Spanish West Florida on 11/10/1801. He is listed as the seller (deceased) of two slaves being inventoried on 10/12/1805; one was named Samson, and the other Bob. This must have been for the dissolution of his estate.

Here is a note from Rootsweb archives: Louisiana History, Vo. XXIV, No 1 ( Winter 1983), pp. 70-84, contains a paper by Albert Tate, Jr., 'Spanish Census of the Baton Rouge District for 1786.'" According to Tate's article, which lists the Heads of Household for this census, "There is included an additional annotation on the Russ family, children of Ezechias who had come to British West Florida in 1772, who were living in the vicinity although not listed on the census."

    Notes:

Note that Michael Marshall's rootsweb tree differs from Niebling on Mary's parentage. Because Marshall's tree is available on rootsweb, I include Neibling's work here. This is also, I confess, beyond the time that I have to evaluate for myself from primary sources; I am indebted to their work.

  27. 177.  Anne ? Brown was born before 1695 in New York State (daughter of William ? Brown).

    Notes:

Butler calls her birth date as "before 1700," but it must have been well before then if her first child was born in 1711. I'll call it "before 1695."

    1. John Dye was born in 1711 in Staten Island, New York City, New York; died before 1776 in Monmouth Co., New Jersey.

    Notes:

    Co-executor of his father's will in 1722.

Benjamin married Mary Morrell. Mary was born about 1684; died about 1733. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  29. 181.  Mary Morrell was born about 1684; died about 1733.

    Notes:

There is a lot of confusion about Mary Morrell; I have also seen her as Rugter Johnson's wife; his son Rutland's second wife (also called Mary Florence); and the wife of Benjamin Hixson Jr.

Emily Hixson's notes (S233), however, place her here, and from the dates I've seen this is the most logical. Note, however, that this is secondhand evidence, and S 233 in fact says that Mary Morrell's parentage is only possible, not definite. She is possible a descendant of Thomas Morrell of Newtown, NJ.

She appears on the Virginia Mysteries page.

    Children:
    1. Mary Hixson was born in 1708.
    2. Joseph Hixson was born in 1713; died in 1775 in Amwell Twp., Hunterdown Co., New Jersey.
    3. 90. Benjamin Hixson, Jr. was born about 1715; died about 1800 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.
    4. Elizabeth Hixson was born in 1719.

  30. 182.  William Hutchinson was born on 12 Jun 1698 in New Jersey (son of Robert Hutchinson); died before Jun 1772 in East Windsor Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey; was buried in Family Cemetery, Etra, Mercer Co., New Jersey.

    Notes:

He immigrated with one brother. He was a Justice for the Peace in Middlesex Co., NJ.

This couple had 13 children, 5 boys and 8 girls.

His father may be Robert Hutchinson, a Scots-Irish immigrant who landed in 1685.

Richard Hutchinson, the pre-eminent researcher for this family, found and recorded the gravesite for Richard and Ann Hutchinson. I've included here excerpts from his narrative about the location of the gravesite; I'd refer the reader to his site for the full narrative.

"The following story appeared in the Village Record, of Hightstown, New Jersey, dated 20 Nov 1857:

"Mr. Editor: On the farm now owned by Isaac Goldy, near Milford, about 2 1/2 miles from Hightstown, there is an ancient burial ground, wherein several of the old owners of the soil thereabout found the last resting place of their earthly remains. From a tombstone in that place I copy the following, verbatim et literatu: "Sacred to the Memory of Ann Hutchinson, Relict of Wm Hutchinson Esqr. departed this Life Jany. 4th 1801. Aged 101 years 9 Months and seven days. She was mother of 13 children, and Grand Mother and great grand mother, & great great Grand Mother of 375 Persons.

"By applying the rule of compound subtraction, or more properly subtraction of denominate numbers, and making allowance for the difference between Old and New Style, we perceive that she was born on the 17th day of March 1699, and consequently lived in three different centuries, i.e. she was born on the 17th, lived through the whole 18th, and died in the 19th century. A very lengthy article might be written upon the times, the scenes, and changes through which she passed, and which she witnessed; but those conversant with history can fill up the great space of her life with general incidents to suit themselves. I will only mention a few facts in connection with her history, and that of her family. She was the wife of Wm. Hutchinson, Esq, a Justice of the Peace under the crown and government of England. This William Hutchinson took up from the government all the land bounded easterly by or near the Earl of Perth's Patent, (at the corner of the farm now owned by Mr. Wesley Sill,) and bounded northerly by Rocky Brook, and extending westerly to at or about the farm now owned by Thomas Mount, (son of Hiram Mount, dec'd); and extending southerly also to the Ely tract, (a tract of 1500 acres taken up by John Ely, my great grandfather,) at or about the property now owned by Abijah J. Chamberlin. You will perceive then, Mr. Editor, that your office, and all of Hightstown south of Rocky Brook, stands on the tract of this old lady's husband. [ . . . ] J.J.E. [Joseph J. Ely]"

Richard Hutchinson then adds another letter:

"In the Village Record on the following week of the 27th Nov 1857, a response to the above article was made by a great-grandson, Daniel P. Hutchinson, of William & Ann:

"Mr. editor - Having noticed an article in your paper of the 20th inst., relative to the history of William and Ann Hutchinson, their burial place, and descendants, and thinking it may be interesting to some of your readers who may have lost the knowledge of their ancestors, I ask your indulgence while I speak of some matters connected with these things.

"William Hutchinson and one of his brothers came from England to this county early in the 18th century. The maiden name of his wife Ann, was Simpson. Their family of children, thirteen in number, as is recorded on Ann Hutchinson's tombstone, consisted of five boys and eight girls. From these branches have sprung numerous families, bearing the name of Tindall in the neighborhood of Hamilton Square; English and Laird in Englishtown; Ely, Wilson, Moore, Taylor, and others, of this vicinity; Kannan [Kinnan], Bennett and others, of New Brunswick. The marriages into families of these names took place about one century ago. With later generations come in the names of Cubberly, Dey, Moore, Taylor, James, Hartman, and many others down to the present time, and now beside hundreds of Hutchinsons in this vicinity, these descendants may be found in almost every resident name among us. Although the date of the woman's birth reaches back a period of about one hundred and sixty years, and her descendants are numbered in the thousands, yet if she were living to-day in your borough, she might receive daily visits from a grand-daughter who is now in the middle age of life, while in other branches of the family she might look upon children with a string of greats too long for any but a clear-headed person to mention.

"In the old burying ground alluded to, this host may look upon the final resting place of their time-honored ancestors- their first parents of this western world. But it would be a sad sight to many, for the plough has already broken the sod over many graves of this ancient burial place, and unless steps be speedily taken, there will soon be left no mark to designate the sacred spot where these first breakers of the soil rest.

"I would ask if some plan may not be devised by which the remaining graves shall be religiously protected, so that future generations may read this headstone. We presume the present owner of the land would sell the lot to the descendants for a trifling amount - That such graves should be thoughtlessly trampled upon seems to us a burning shame; and from the personal knowledge we have of many of the descendants, we believe that a sufficient amount of money could be raised to do it in a permanent manner. D.P.H. [Daniel P. Hutchinson]"

Richard Hutchinson continues, about this gravesite:

"Today, this ancient cemetery still exists off of Cedarville Road but with only the two existing stones of Ann (Simpson) Hutchinson and her husband William plus pieces of other fieldstones used as grave markers. I'm afraid that nothing was done after the above article to preserve it and nothing has been done since. Recently, many members of the community thought that site had been protected by East Windsor Township due to the work of the East Windsor Township Preservation Commission several years ago. This was work in which I participated to a limited degree and even received written thanks from the Commission for helping preserve the site. However, after many years, I was among the many surprised residents who found out through various news articles in the local Hightstown, New Jersey papers that this ancient burial ground was not protected and had not been so protected as had been proclaimed by the Commission. After having found this gravesite, many years ago, I have walked through the fields to the site and tended to this ancient cemetery each November in an attempt to keep it open. I have planted numerous bulbs near the stones and have even introduced it to my grandson, aged 5, who would help me. This is the oldest known cemetery, with existing stones, in East Windsor Township and it should be protected from further destruction. The blade of the farmer's plow in the field currently passes over those two remaining burials while the farm nearby uses the site as a place to discard various materials. It would be a worthy project of the Hightstown-East Windsor Historical Society to clean it up, put a fence around it, and try to gain the proper preservation of the site for the future generations. It would be a great project for the Society to complete the job that the East Windsor Township Preservation Commission failed to finish.

"William is buried in field to the right of the big bend in the road from Etra to Roosevelt, after leaving Etra, by Feldsher Road. The two trees in the field to the right mark the spot of these two graves.

"I found unauthored notes & material on the Hutchinson family in the New Jersey Historical Society in 1980s in an uncataloged cardboard box. I was given access to this material that appeared to have been given to the Society from a family. It contained newspaper clips, notes, and many pages of handwritten family sheets. I believe that this material MAY have come from Elmer Tindall Hutchinson, who was an officer of the Society and a well known author and historian. In this material, was information on the William and Ann (Simpson) Hutchinson family, which indicated that an Isaac Hutchinson of Three Hills Run, NJ, had the family record material on William and Ann."

William married Ann Simpson about 1719 in New Jersey. Ann was born on 17 Mar 1699; died on 4 Jan 1801 in East Windsor Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey; was buried in Family Cemetery, Etra, Mercer Co., New Jersey. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  31. 183.  Ann Simpson was born on 17 Mar 1699; died on 4 Jan 1801 in East Windsor Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey; was buried in Family Cemetery, Etra, Mercer Co., New Jersey.

    Notes:

She was a remarkable woman and a key to much later genealogical history, if only by the number of her descendants.

According to Richard Hutchinson, "William And Ann (Simpson) Hutchinson lived in both Middlesex County and Monmouth County, New Jersey, in the early 1700s. They had 13 children. We know this fact because of the inscription on Ann's gravestone in the family burial plot on their homestead land. The inscription reads: "Sacred to the Memory of Ann Hutchinson, Relict of Wm Hutchinson Esqr. departed this Life Jany. 4th 1801. Aged 101 years 9 Months and seven days. She was mother of 13 children, and Grand Mother and great grand mother, & great great Grand Mother of 375 Persons." Their first born child was a Robert Hutchinson, born 11 December 1720. Therefore, one can assume that they were married in, or about, 1720."
