518 Bolivar, New Orleans, Louisiana |
- aged 62 (error); widow; born in Louisiana as with both parents; has had 6 children, 3 still living. She appears alone on her page, but her daughter Lavinia’s entry (married to Joseph Markey) says that her family was living at the same address. I assume that they were all still living together, as in 1900.

Notes |
- There seems to be no marriage record in NOLA that I can find for the couple. I can't find any hint of the family on the 1860 or 1880 census, which is odd. And see under her husband about the confusion in his name.
New Orleans City directories help. By 1876, Josephine was living on Bolivar; she appears that year as “Wiltz, Josephine, wid. Alcime [sic], r. 96 Bolivar. A few lines above, her son “Alcime” is living at the same address.
This notice appeared in in the Times-Picayune on Friday, October 10, 1884, under notices about “Second Recorder’s Court,” p2: “Josephine Wiltz, for assault and battery on Angele Menelle, and John Collins for larceny, were placed under Bonds.” This is a story that would be interesting if we knew it.
In 1890 and 1891 city directories show Josephine Wiltz, widow Alcine, is living at 133 Bolivar in New Orleans.
In 1900, Josephine is living in the household of her son-in-law Joseph Markey, who married Lavinia; she was the mother of 4 children, 4 still living. In her obituary, Lavinia is named as "beloved sister of Mrs. George Hemenway and the late Alcine J. and Norbert J. Wiltz, a native of this city." These would make four children. She's had 6 overall, however. This is accurately counted on the 1910 census.
