Obituary | Obituary, The New York Times, 29 May 1903, p9: James B. Houston Dead. Was Godson of President Buchanan—Served in the Navy. James Buchanan Houston, retired broker, and godson of the President of the United States for whom he was named, died yesterday from heart trouble in his rooms at the Rockingham, Broadway and Fifth-sixth Street, after an illness of six weeks. He was sixty-four years old and was born in Washington. His grandfather, Commodore Truxton, received from Congress a gold medal for gallantry in the fight between the United States frigate Constellation and the French ship of war La Vengeance. Mr. Houston himself entered the navy shortly before the civil war and was on the San Jacinto, under Capt. Wilkes, when it capture Mason and Slidell. after the war her entered teh insurance business and later became a broker. Until six year ago, when he retired, he was a member of the firm o T. Pearsall & Co. For over ten years he was President of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. He married Helen Middleton of Washington, D.C., who survives him. He leaves also a son, Buchanan Houston; a daughter; and two unmarried sisters. He was a member of the Union and Racquet Clubs, the New York Whist Club, the Loyal Legion, and the Sons of the American Revolution. [1] | |
