Obituary |
Obit., Times-Picayune (New Orleans, La), 27 Nov. 1906, p7:
Captain James B. McLellan
Captain James B. McLellan, uncle of Alden and Orris I. McLellan, of this city, died yesterday at his home in San Marcos, Texas. He was 79 years old. Capt. McClellan was formally a steamship captain. He was born at Warren, Maine, and came to this port for years, after which he engaged in the lowboat business between the city and the mouth of the river. He was a very well-known man here, but about 15 years ago removed to Texas, where he had a large farm.
Captain McClellan was one of five brothers of whom only Captain George McClellan is now living. He leaves a wife and four sons and two daughters, all residents of Texas, except Mrs. Corroll Palmer, of Rosedale in this state, who left yesterday for San Marcos. |

Notes |
- His aunt was his wife's grandmother; they are first cousins (once removed).
He walked with a limp. According to family history,
"During the California gold rush James sailed a ship into San Francisco. His crew deserted to go into the gold fields. With no prospect of finding a replacement crew James also went into the gold fields. It was there he injured his leg, having to walk all the way back to San Francisco in the winter (nearly loosing his lift) he permanently injured his leg thus leaving him with a limp and the need to use a cane later in life."
James moved to Texas San Marcos area to a 7,000 acre sheep ranch, and when tariffs became to high switched to cattle. He was also one of the first to use barbed wire to fence his ranch. He never fought any one over the use of this wire, would just replace the sections as they would be torn down."
A tree of this branch of the family was apparently compiled by James' daughter Sadie; a descendant of this branch has preserved this and added information to it about living members. According to the tree, James Brackett McLellan moved from Maine to San Marcos, Texas after the Civil War. Four of his children then migrated to Maricopa Co., Arizona from San Marcos:
1. George William McLellan
2. Frances McLellan
3. Charles Adams McLellan
4. Albion Horatio McLellan
See also the letter by his son Charles Adams about living in Arizona. [3]
