- He started the war as a sergeant in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, CSA; he was in Co. "H", also called the Rockbridge 2nd Dragoons; by the end of the war he was a Captain. The 14th saw service in western Virginia; a book about them by Robert Driver apparently exists (1988). He is included on the Civil War page. He appears in the Confederate Rosters in this regiment as "private (most likely)," Lieutenant, and then Captain, all in this same company. Company H in this unit also included a his brother Private Samuel P. Strain.
The Library of Virginia includes a photograph of his house, located on Rt. 11 between Lexington and Staunton, VA, taken by the WPA. It includes a brief history of the home, giving the names of informants as Mr. H.C. Slusser ("present owner") and Mr. James W. McClung, both of Lexington. [2, 3]
