- Samuel P. Strain served as a private in Company H of the 14th Virginia Cavalry, CSA, which saw service in western Virginia; this unit included his brother James A. Strain. The 14th saw service in western Virginia; a book about them by Robert Driver apparently exists (1988). He is included on the Civil War page.
Samuel Strain, Blacksmith, appears in the household of Joseph Myers of Jefferson Co. in the 1860 census, aged 27; no relation to the Myers family is descri bed. He's never described as a blacksmith elsewhere.
