- He served in the Civil War as a member of the 60th Indiana Regiment, Co., D. According to his obituary, "He was a member of Co. D 60th Ind. Regiment. He was made a prisoner at the Battle of Murfreesboro, and during the war was in the Battle of Arkansas Post, Champion Hill, and the Battle at Jackson, Miss. At the later place he was taken prisoner and conveyed to Libby Prison where the terrible food and surroundings undermined his health. He was finally paroled and came to Indianapolis where he lay in the hospital at Camp Morton until discharged."
