- He served in the 8th Regiment (I Company), VA Infantry, which was formed in Leesburg, VA, in 1862. He appears there in Confederate Rosters for VA as "private (most likely)". According to the Simpson history, he was killed May 24, 1864, at the battle of Drury's Bluff (Drewry's Bluff). Something seems to be wrong here with this date because references to this battle I have seen locate it during the Peninsula Campaign, in May of 1862.
According to S298, he was killed June 27, 1862, at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, in the Seven Days Battles. Lacking a copy of his war record, I will go with the latter, but this needs to be checked. Also according to Skillman history, his nephew Bushrod W. Lynn of Richmond, VA, wrote "I helped bury him." He is included on the Civil War page.
Another possible error: the Simpson family history gives his birthdate as May 24, 1824: this would seem to be another Bushrod who survived the war (was aged 36 on the 1860 census). The Skillman history has "abt. 1820," so I'm going with that for now.
Note that he also has a nephew named Bushrod Washington Skilman (his brother John's son).
